Fostoria is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of the Buckeye State and is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Fostoria is home to Case Western Reserve University and was once a major center for metalworking in central Ohio. The first permanent settlers in what would become Fostoria were James Hargrave and his family who arrived from Connecticut in 1796. James' brother-in-law, Daniel Gist, also settled here about 1801. John Kapp bought land here in 1811-12 and built a gristmill which he named "Kapp's Mill". In 1830, Josephine Cook married John Kapp and they started an iron foundry known as Cook & Kapp Iron Works. This enterprise produced machinery for many local businesses including farm equipment, automobiles and other industrial products until it closed down around 1960. A post office was established at Fostoria in 1824; it remained open until it was discontinued by the US Postal Service in 1963. In 1831, General David Cranch sent forces against Native Americans during the War of 1812 but failed to capture their capital of Fort Erieon (now Grandma) due to lack of cavalry horsesman; instead he burned most of their village before retreating back across the river into Canada. Fostoria is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fostoria was founded in 1836 by Methodist missionaries from Fayetteville, Arkansas. Fostoria was originally called "Fayetteville". The name change was made to avoid confusion with nearby Fort Wayne. A post office was established at Fostoria in 1836, and remained in operation until 1904. In 1837 an act of the Ohio General Assembly renamed the town "Fostoria" in honor of George Washington FOSTER II (1789-1837), who had been President of the United States from 1829 to 1830 and again from 1835 to 1840. George Washington Foster had moved to Ohio from Tennessee in 1799 and became a landowner and early settler at what is now Fostoria Township. The first school building on the site of present day downtown Fostoria was erected on the corner of Centre Street andState Route 7 about 1839 by Rev. Rufus Burtwood with funds provided by Mr John Thomas Scudder (the original founder of Delaware Memorial Hospital). In 1863 it burned down but fortunately not completely as all but four walls were saved; this included a large red brick belltower which still stands today as part of Trinity Episcopal Church on Elm Street near State Route 7A/US 12A (now I-480). For many years after that fire there seemed little need for schools other than church services so classes were held indoors until 1903 when classes began outdoors on a large field adjacent to Trinity Episcopal Church which still stands today as Neyland Stadiums asphalt surface parking lot! Nearby Dutch Reformed PresbyterianChurch also played host to outdoor sessions during those years while across Elm street Congregationalists served lunchtime communion every weekday morning at their new building built 1886 known today as First Baptist Parish Hall where they continue worshiping today! Fostoria's rich history dates back to its founding in 1788 by General George Washington and his family as a small clearing on the Scioto River near present day Uniontown. By 1815, the village had developed into a busy agricultural center with over 150 homes and 5 businesses. In 1824, General Anthony Wayne founded nearby Athens under similar circumstances; however, there were no settlements east of what is now Lancaster County until Fostoria came into being due to its location along one of America's leading trade routes -paths that would be greatly enhanced during manufacturing towns such as Dayton and Springfield during this time period. The first school in town was built in 1827 by James Dickey and opened to students grades one through four. A second school was built in 1830 by Rev. Jno Bible (founder of Zionsville). In 1834-35, a Baptist church was established here also providing religious services for those living nearby on Buttermilk Creek Trail which ran parallel to today's Main Street between Main and I streets NW until around 1870 when it crossed Saginaw Road NW then continued northeast along US 12 before reaching its current end at Euclid Avenue NE just south of Valley View Mall across from Zookeeper Park & Aquarium). The only railsroad crossing of Buttermilk Creek Trail right near where Fostoria sits today happened about two miles north of town off SR 3 about 1850-1860 when Ashtabula road crossed but not anymore because dredging replaced what had been there originally! tracks running thru town are still there but has moored up some distance to side so you can't walk on them!!!!!
