He named his business after himself—Giorgio Napolitano’s (1876-1952) historic palace on the Tiber River where he entertained some of Europe’s most eminent politicians and diplomats. Ettore Gambero, an Italian chemist turned roaster, opened his own espresso shop at 5th Avenue and 54th Street in New York City in 1912. Although Café Giorgio became world-renowned for its unique blend of Arabica beans roasted by Gambero himself, many cafes followed suit and began serving gourmet coffee throughout America during the 1920s and 1930s under various names such as The Roastery at 2nd Avenue And 34st Street or The Dutch Coffee House on 5th Avenue between 86th and 87th Streets. During World War II, cafés across America served up specially adapted versions of their regular coffee products in support of the Allied war effort. For example, The Netherland Coffee House at 5th Avenue between 106th and 107th Streets offered Dunkin' Donuts doughnuts wrapped around cigarettes as part of their wartime promotion;[1] likewise, The American Coffee House at 307 West 44Th Street offered soldiers Maresca black tea from its private garden;[2] while Café Militaire at Lexington Avenue & 8 thStreet served French press beans sourced from enemy forces liberated by U.S Forces.[3] These specialty coffees helped ensure that citizens continued to drink quality cup of Joe even when hostilities ceased; they also demonstrated appreciation for fine quality coffee being made near them during difficult times.
