Forest Park is a village in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1834 by John Bounds and his wife Sally Treece as a log and frame farmstead on the west side of the Scioto River. The name "Forest Park" originated from what was then an undeveloped area that included much of what is now Forest Park Village. In 1892, James Moultrie donated land to become part of the village and added 1,500 acres (6 km2) to its boundaries. That same year, the Village accomplished another milestone when it became one of only two villages in Ohio to be granted city status by the General Assembly. The other was Athens Township., also in Columbiana County. In 1923, Forest Park added a golf course to its offerings and has since grown into one of America's top golf destinations with more than 100 holes including par 5s over , some measuring over . The courses include both public and private members' clubs which offer different experiences for all types of golfer including beginner to expert players alike. Forest Park is a village in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The population was 11,814 at the 2010 census, making it the fastest-growing village in Dayton. It is also home to some of the largest open spaces in town - including Great American Forest, which straddles both US 27 and I-71 expansions that connect Dayton to Cleveland and Cincinnati. The first settlers arrived in 1796 when Major James Wilkinson donated land for a parish on the Scioto River near present day Highland Heights. At first, only men were allowed to live there; later women were allowed as well. The name "Forest Park" originated from an old French word meaning "foresty place." In 1802, two brothers bought acres near what is now known as Maple Leaf Drive for $10 per acre. They named their new settlement "Forest Park." In 1834, Orson Pratt founded The Universalist Church in Forest Park with his wife Lucy Stone Pratt (née Lyman). The church built its first building on East Market Street in 1840 and soon outgrew that location. A new church was built on West Main Street in 1842 by local ministers including Revs Jesse Hovey and Samuel Morse (founder of Western Union). After Stone's death in 1859, her husband John Adams Lyman became pastor of The Universalist Church at Forest Park. In 1865 Drury & Hunt Funeral Home moved into their current building at 222 State Road 513 after buying adjacent land from Drury & Hunt Brewery’s parent company Wabash Brewing Company . In 1889 Edwin Forrest purchased 1/4 mile west of present day Maple Leaf Drive from J[ohn] D[evan] Cuyler for $1 million dollars . Forrest renamed his property “Forest Park” after his father’s plantation near Savannah Ga., “The Forrest Estate” . He developed it into one of America’s most important agricultural regions with four major crops: cotton (the primary crop until 1949), corn (1901–1910), rice (1945–1950), and soybeans (1951–1957). One hundred years ago this week – February 2nd – President Grover Cleveland made history when he signed Executive Order No. 10597 establishing Forest Park as an incorporated village within Dayton proper limits with all powers vested therein except those specifically delegated to Village Manager Charles Sayers or any other officer specially appointed by him pursuant to said order or regulations herein contained . On this date Mrcgeorge Washington Douglass , son of Ebenezer Douglass delivered remarks before our fellow citizens characterizing forest park situation as one where colored people must work together if they are going to enjoy equal opportunity here
The Forest Park area in Ohio was first settled by the Shawnee people in the 17th century. The area was later bought by the British Crown and became part of the Province of Pennsylvania. In 1801, Ohio was admitted to the United States as a state, and Forest Park became part of Cleveland. In 1916, Cleveland renamed its city after Andrew Jackson, who had been president during much of the American Civil War.
