Forest Park is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the southern edge of the Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,569. The name Forest Park is derived from a forest that once stood in the area now known as town. The first permanent settler in Forest Park was John Atherton in 1814. By 1830, there were five families living in what is now Forest Park Township: Hargrave, Greenough, Howland, Swartz and Weston. The township was formed from part of Medina County on February 17th, 1831. On October 15th of that year, it was renamed to honor General George Washington's home country of Virginia and its location at Fairfax Court House became an official part of Forest Park Township. In 1837-38, work began on what would become Ohio State Route 41 which crossed present day Forest Park Township from east to west and connected with US 1 near Lorain Heights to form a route that ran through today's city limits (the old alignment can still be seen along Division Street near Ely Drive). The new routing allowed travelers within Ohio to get close to Columbus without having to go outside the state boundaries. It also opened up much of what is now downtown Cleveland into forested areas for the first time and helped promote development around this core sector within Cleveland's borders In 1850-51 alone, employment inpenterry increased by 50%, while farm production grew by 300%. This growth led not just to job creation but also land purchases and expansion into other parts of northeast Ohio as well - something which has continued throughout much recent suburbanization elsewhere within Cleveland proper (and even beyond).
