Fairview Park is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and seat of Fairview Township. The population was 12,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Fairview Park was James Cook in 1792 on his survey of the eastern coast of North America. Cook named it for Sir John Fairfield, 1st Baronet (1727-1807), an Englishman who had settled in that region some years earlier and had been interested in developing its natural resources. In 1812, William Henry Harrison became President of the United States and ordered General Anthony Wayne to march on Columbus to demand possession of what are now Warren County and Fulton County because they were claimed by Great Britain as part of their Northwest Territory (the present-day states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota). However, while General Wayne was marching through central Ohio he met with Captain David Wilkinson who told him about a large tract lying northwest between Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River which would be available for purchase if he could drive out the British settlers there. Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest followed up this story by saying that a large body of Native Americans were waiting to ambush Major Wayne as he passed through their country on his way to attack Fort Dearborn on July 16theenth, 1813.
