One of the most important aspects of air force gift history is the appreciation and love that these individuals have for their service to our country. Air Force members from Fairview Park, Ohio have given back to the community in many ways over the years. In 1945, Fairview Park was one of the first locations in Greater Dayton area. The United States Air Forces veteran population was high at that time as World War II had ended and new recruits were needed to help support a growing army. From 1947-1949, Fairview Park housed an AAF Bombardment Wing Headquarters (HQ), which acted as a command post for Allied bomber forces stationed in central Ohio. In 1951, HQ moved to Wright-Patterson AFB after being’ transferred from Foggs AFB, Guam. The USAF Museum located on campus currently houses components of both HQ tours; HQactivated C-47s (the only unit assigned permanent home at Wright-Patterson AFB during this time) and E-4B Skyraiders used by Headquarters Bombardment Wing during Cold War era events such as Summit Conference ( 1948), Arab Oil embargo crisis (1951), Korean War conflict (1950/1953), New Year's Eve fireworks show at Harmondsworth AB (1959). After more than 50 years atFairviewParkAAF Museum has more than 20 aircraft on display including: P-3C Supermarine Seafarers maritime patrol aircraft which served with NATO until 2003; RB-17 Flying Fortress bombers used during World War II; F6F Hellcat fighter planes flown by USAF Pacific Fleet during Korean War; KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling tanker role in Global Wars I and II; AH–1 Cobra helicopter units flown into Iraq and Afghanistan Campaigns since 2001 The Fairview Park AAF Museum contains items from all periods of military service with an emphasis on American aviation history between World Wars I & II through present day.
