In the early 1800s, coffee beans were roasted on small family farms in Fairfield County, Ohio. Roasting methods at the time included firing a hole in the top of a grapefruit and placing it over a live fire to roast the beans. The first coffeehouses opened up in Fairfield in 1824 and by 1830, there were six such establishments operating in town. In 1856, one Mr. Brownell established what is now known as The Starbuck's Coffee House at 5th and State Streets in Fairfield while anotherMr. Haggerty founded The Gourd Neck Coffee House at 4th and State Streets soon thereafter. These two businesses are considered to be the beginning of commercial coffee production in Fairfield County. Coffee houses continued to thrive through the late nineteenth century until they were replaced by electric roasters during prohibition (1912-1933). After prohibition ended, many small farmers began to turn their plantations into cafes/restaurants using imported European espresso machines that they acquired from Americans who had returned home after World War II combat duty or from Europe where cafés still thrived despite Prohibition prohibitions against caffeine sales
