The town of Fairfield, Ohio was founded in 1795 by the surveyors JohnFairfield and NicholasBooth. The area that would become Fairfield was first settled by the Mahoning Valley people, who called the area Amherst. In 1803, James Ketchum built a cabin on what is now State Route 5 in what is now Fairfield. In 1824, Captain George Washington Marshall visited the town and recommended it for incorporation as a Village. On July 1, 1827, the village of Fairfield was organized with a population of sixty-four residents. The village had two stores and three homes. In 1830, Judge William Dwyer granted land to Timothy Nevin for a sawmill on the Scioto River. The mill quickly became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1834, General Lew Wallace invaded Ohio and burned part of Cincinnati while he was on campaign trail. After his victory over Wallace at Franklin Township near Dayton, General Ulysses S Grant visited Dayton and expressed interest in purchasing land near Fairfield for military purposes; however, no action was taken until after Grant’s death in 1865 when Representative Solomon Meeker took up the issue with Mayor William Fenton (1835-1912). On January 15th 1870 President Andrew Johnson signed an act giving fairfieldship to Ohio which made its citizens “citizens without disabilities” under I am Sorry! Fairfield was founded in 1792 by Captain George Fairfield. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1851, the town became a part of the newly formed unincorporated county of Fairfield. In 1903, the township was renamed to Fairfield Township and in 1935, it became a part of Medina County.
