Fairfield, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is a part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. The Fairfield Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Fairfield were French traders and travelers who passed through the area on their way to Detroit in 1796. In 1814, United States forces burned down an Indian village near present-day Fairfield after unsuccessfully trying to capture its leader, Chief Weahington. A year later, General Zachary Taylor's army burned down another village in this same location after coming across indications that the villagers had been trading with Indians without permission from the United States authorities. The American Thorntown Settlement, founded by farmers and fur trappers in 1815 near present-day Kenton County, was named for General Taylor's headquarters at Thorntownesville (now Youngstown). In 1827, local landowner John Dolan donated 1,000 acres (400 ha) ofland east of current-day Maytown Township to create what would eventually become Fairfield Township. Part of this land had been surveyed since 1796 but not developed as early as that because it lay within original Indian territory claimed bythe Shawnee Nation It wasn't until 1830 when a group of Dutch settlers decided to settle along the Scioto River adjacent to present-day Maytown Township They called their new community Sintra or "Haven" because they believed it would provide them with shelter from Native Americans during wintertime while they hunted wild game nearby This initial settler community was soon joined by others as Methodists began proselytizing among these early colonists and becoming known as "The Saints" due to their belief that Christ had come down into earth specifically to preach His gospel message here amongst them As time went on more people arrived seeking opportunities for themselves within what would become fairfield township including: Germans (1839), Irishmen (1847), Baptists (1850), Poles (1861), Italians (1908), Russians (1920s & 1930s), Japanese Americans interned during World War II (1942–1945) and manufacturing workers brought over from Cleveland beginning in earnest during World War II . Fairfield is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,405 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cuyahoga County. Fairfield was founded in 1814 by members of the Second Continental Congress as a training ground for officers of the new nation. The city entered into an alliance with Youngstown in 1846 and became part of that city's municipality. In 1907, Fairfield merged with neighboring Strongsville to form what is now known as "the Big Four". That merger led to the departure of many Fairfield residents to Cleveland and Akron during that period; however, most Fairfieldians have remained in their community since then. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. The Cuyahoga River forms its eastern border and limits most of the town's boundaries on each side.
The Fairfield community was founded in 1814 when a group of farmers led by John Dickey settled on the site of present-day Fairfield. The original town plat was filed on July 1, 1814, and the first post office opened in that year. In 1816, the name of the town was changed to Portsmouth because of its proximity to Portsmouth, Virginia. The community experienced growth during the 19th century as it became an agricultural center with crops such as corn, beans, wheat and tobacco. By 1890, Fairfield had a population of 2,500 and substantial commercial development including a hotel and several stores. However, during World War II most residents fled to rural areas due to wartime shortages of food and housing. After the war Fairfield experienced modest growth until becoming an inactive incorporated village in 1990.
