Fairfield is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Muskingum County. Fairfield has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) and is located on the eastern edge of the Great Lakes region. The area that would become Fairfield was first settled by German immigrants in 1795. In 1801, Fairfield became part of Ohio when it was admitted as the 29th state to the United States. The town charter was granted on October 12, 1802, and named for Colonel Abraham Fairbanks (1768-1834), an early settler in what would become Muskingum County. In 1824, John Cranch erected a log cabin near present-day Oakley which served as headquarters for several months during his survey ofMuskingum County lands east of Dayton. In 1830, Wm Hennepin built a dam across Beaver Creek and laid out a town site around it on land purchased from Nathan Kapp. That same year, fairgrounds were established downstream along Beaver Creek where picnic parties could bring their food to be cooked over open fires while enjoying views of Toledo and its reservoirs from nearby hillsides. A post office called Fort Wayne opened in 1833; it remained in operation until 1888. The townsite grew rapidly after this initial development but eventually petered out due to competition from larger towns throughout central Ohio associated with railroad construction and other economic growth opportunities during this time period. The original buildings now standing in downtown Fairfield date back to 1840 when General James Van Buren founded what is now Van Buren University here as part of his unsuccessful effort to gain election as President of the United States in 1840 against incumbent Aaron Burr: One building on Third Street still stands – used originally as barracks by local militia during American Civil War days – although much damage has been done to it over time including arson attempts! Burlington Northern Railroad later extended their line through town forming Union Station just east of where Third Street intersects Elm Street today making transportation within Fairfield very easy; however Amtrak does not currently serve that station so I'm sure many people never knew about it! After Union Station closed down following World War II there were few opportunities for passenger train travel within town so commerce slowly died off until recently when new apartments have started being built just southwest corner between Elm & 3rd streets next door to old bank building which once housed phone company - I think there are also some small shops inside too

In 1801, Fairfield was named after the English town of Fairfield in Connecticut. The town was founded by two farmers, Isaiah and Jonathan Caldwell, in a tract of land that had been surveyed by Major General George Washington. The area now includes the cities of Cleveland and Toledo. The first settlers in Fairfield came from Utica, New York. By 1800, there were about ninety families living in the town. In 1802, Colonel John Woodward bought a tract of land north of Fairfield from Jonathan Caldwell for $3 per acre. He built a log cabin and named it "Woodward's Tavern." At this time, the townsite had only one street name- Market Street- but soon other streets were added including State Street (now University Avenue), Prairie Road (now Griggs Avenue), and Elmira Road (now Beecher Avenue). By 1830, there were over one hundred residents living in Fairfield. That year, President James Kapp established an agricultural school at what is now the Community School District No. 2 campus which served as the town's primary educational center until 1921 when the district merged with Cleveland City Schools to form Cuyahoga County Public Schools. After Ohio became a state in 1803,Fairfield became part of Licking County until 1837 when it became Trumbull County due to its location on Lake Erie near nearly all of modern-day Cleveland and most of today's Toledo . In 1861, followingthe American Civil War,Fairfield sided with Confederate States forces against the Union army during the war effort; this made him one of few Ohio municipalities to remain loyal to slavery despite pro-Union sentiment throughout much of his county . After Reconstruction ended in 1865 after three years' struggle by both slaveowning factions within his colony/county - many key citizens chose to leave for states such as Illinois or Kentucky - most easterners who had grown up learning about Ohio history through stories told around fireside tables gradually lost interest as memories faded away about early versions of their home state where they once lived... In 1870 Fairfield incorporated as a city under an act passed by United States Congress ; but due largely to financial difficulty caused by high taxes levied on property values related to being part of Trumbull County rather than Licking or Lucas counties; cityhood did not materialize until after World War II when real estate prices started recovering somewhat followingWorld War II suburban migration into central OH from Midwest cities like Chicago and Detroit.. Today approximately 60%of people living within city limits identify themselves as Irish Americans while 30%identify themselves as German Americans .. While originally establishing himself primarily among fur traders and other wealthy commercial interests along Lake Erie’s waterfront – such tavern keepers likely enjoyed considerable social prestige associated with their status quo enclave – David Witherow took control over politics more fully afterabsorbing portions oiTrumbull &Lauderdale counties into Cleveland late 19th century thru mid 20th century becoming mayor 3 times overall beginning 1890s thru 1920s – later serving terms w/Cleveland City Council thru 1986… Throughout these decades Witherow effectively ran municipal government while business leaders organized various civic organizations that promoted growth & development downtown including Chamber Of Commerce (& later Greater Cleveland Chamber); Professional Club; Steeples Hill Park Conservancy; Downtown Development Authority; etc.; eventually leadingto incorporation into larger metropolitan services areas likeCleveland Metroparks system circa 1990s…. True roots oi fair field go back further even tho some consider it ’roughneck’ community beginnings can be traced back several centuries earlier!
The town of Fairfield, Ohio was founded in 1812 by the merger of two villages, Fairfield and Wellington. The town was named for Colonel John Fairbank, who had purchased land in the area. The first settler in the area was James Caldwell, who built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1814. In 1824, the millrace that ran through present-day Fairfield began to be used to generate waterpower for local mills. A post office was established atFairfield in 1827, and by 1830, the population of the town had grown to about 100 people. The first school opened in1829, and by 1850 there were five schools operating within Fairfield. By 1860, however, only one school remained operational within the town limits. In 1870–71, a railroad was constructed through central Ohio andFairfield became an important stop on this line. As this railroad grew more popular, so did business opportunities for businesses withinFairfield. By 1880, four stores and six small businesses existed withinFairfield; these businesses produced goods such as groceries and clothing to sell directly to customers inside or outside of their stores. In 1886–87 a large factory was built adjacent to Main Street in FairFIELD which provided jobs for many local residents during that time period; this factory also manufactured items such as shoes and hats for local consumers. When World War I erupted in Europe in 1914-1918 there were significant shortages of food products available throughout Great Britain due to wartime production constraints; likewise during World War II when rationing occurred throughout much of Europe it led some people from areas with limited access to food resources into communities like Fairfield where they could purchase goods from local merchants rather than face hunger or malnutrition
