Fairfield is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Fairfield is bordered by Lyndhurst to the east, Euclid to the north and west, and Strongsville to the south. The first settlement in what is now Fairfield dates back to 1796 when Peter Fairchild purchased land from the Lenape people. He built a cabin on his farmstead and named it after himself,Fairfield Manor. In 1813, John Dearborn established a gristmill on Dearborn Creek which became known as Dearborn Mills; this mill continued production until 1916. After Dearborn's death in 1836, his son George H., Jr., took over operations of the mill and changed its name to Fairfield Mills (Now owned by DTE Energy). In 1846 Harry Payne founded Payne Bros which farmed on present day Park Road for several years before moving into grocery storekeeping in 1854 when he opened Payne's Grocery Store at 430 State Street (now about 100 feet east of Main Street). This store was replaced by Payne's Grist Mill & Distillery Company which operated until 1907 when it merged with Jethro Tullis' Trustees Grain Exchange Company to form The Trustees Grain Exchange Company (later American grain merchants)). In 1912 The Trustees Grain ExchangeCompany merged with National Grains Corporation creating The National Grains Co-operative Ltd.). One year later they were acquired by Armour Shepherds Incorporated who changed their name again to Armour Paper Products Corporation in 1951 following purchase of Swift Paper Products also located in Fairfield.. In 1966 Armour Paper Products Corporation sold its paper products business including Fairfield mills to Bethlehem Steel Corporation who renamed them Bethlehem Steel Paper Products Incorporated.. steel production ended in 1974 leaving only printing products remaining at Bethlehem Steel PaperProducts Incorporated.. This company was sold to Dow Corning Incorporated who changed their name back finallyto Dow Corning Industries Incorporation on January 1st 1987) making it one of America’s largest manufacturing companies! Fairfield is a city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Lucas County. It was founded by Dr. George Fairfield and others in 1814 as a agricultural settlement on the Scioto River. The name "Fairfield" may be derived from an Indian word meaning "peaceful place." The first permanent settler in what would become Fairfield was George Fairfield, who arrived from Ireland with his family in 1814. He built a cabin on the Scioto River and named his new community after himself. By 1830, about 250 people had located here and started to grow crops and raise livestock. In 1834, George's son Amos took over farming operations and renamed the community "Lucasville". After Amos' death in 1850, ownership of the town reverted toGeorge Fairfield's heirs until it became part of Lucas County when it was formed in 1902. In 1835, Lucasville began to attract mining interests due to its location near famous Sylvania Hill coal mine (now known as Ford Station). A group of investors led by John Silliman purchased land around Sylvania Hill for a minesite that would eventually produce over one million tons of coal each year. As economic conditions slowly deteriorated throughout much of eastern Ohio due primarily to manufacturing closures & automation taking away many jobs along with war production demand increases - harassment & vandalism against businesses picked up along with various tax protests culminating with what is now known as 'The Great Fire'of 1906(6). By 1950 only 2% of employed residents lived within 1 mile of either downtown Lucasville or any other major town center while 60% resided within 10 miles radius only(7). This situation continued through suburbanization throughout most eastern Ohio leading eventuallyto increased poverty levels& crime rates within inner cities& reduced job opportunities& isolation among those left behindduring this era called "the Great Recession".
