Fairfield is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 11,604 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth most populous city in Ohio and the second most populous city in Fairfield County. The Fairfield community is located in the Township of Fairfield, Ohio, within the Miami County seat of Cleveland. The population was 25,972 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Cuyahoga River and has a rich agricultural history dating back to earlysettlement times. The first Europeans to reach Fairfield were drawn by the fertile soil and natural resources available here. In 1814, Colonel John Dennison founded what would become known as Dennison's Corners Village on land that he had donated to the town in 1811. This pioneer settlement boasted a store, Methodist church and schoolhouse, a ferry landing on the Cuyahaga River and two miles of dirt road leading east from it to Farmington (now part of Medina). During its early days, Fairfield was known for its kindly residents and its wide variety of crops- including corn, beans and potatoes- grown for local consumption or export. As business grew more organized however, some residents began to feel that their town wasn't doing enough to support itself. They lobbied for independent incorporation as a village in 1827; this request was granted but with one important change-Fairfield became an incorporated town instead of an unincorporated township. Like other small towns throughout America during this time period,Fairfield experienced rapid growth when railroads came through nearby cities such as Cleveland and Cincinnati looking for new markets for their products. By 1830 Fairfield had reached a population of over 100 people; by 1840 it had tripled that number thanks to growing trade with both England and Germany. One reason why Railroads flourished in these years is because they offered entrepreneurs like George Stephenson easy access to markets that otherwise would have been too difficult or expensive to access without them- making all manner of goods possible which hitherto would only have been accessible through sailing or land transportation methods
In 1814, Fairfield was founded by William H. Fairfield and his wife Elizabeth. The first post office in the area was established in 1816. In 1830, the town became a part of Cuyahoga County. In 1836, the county seat was moved to Cleveland. The population of Fairfield grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching 100,000 by 1910. During World War I, Fairfield served as an important supply depot for the war effort in Cleveland. After the war ended, Fairfield experienced several economic downturns before experiencing a period of growth in the early 2000s.
