Fairfield is a town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,593 at the 2010 census. Fairfield was founded in 1824 by General Arthur Stroud and named after the village of Fairfield, Connecticut, which he had visited while on military service there during the War of 1812. It became a city in 1907. The first post office was established in 1825. The townsite that now makes up Fairfield was part of the Northwest Territory claimed by Great Britain as part of their Treaty of Ghent in 1795. In 1824, General Arthur Stroud acquired land east of Hamilton River from the Shawnee people and began to build a town on it – Fairfield Township. He named it for his village home on Connecticut Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut – but this name did not catch on until after his death because many people thought Hartford might be spelled "Fairsville". In 1827, however, John Pike bought some more land east of downtown and donated it to Fairfield Township; this parcel included what is today's northwest side of town limits (northwest corner intersection with First Street). On July 1, 1907, Fairfields incorporation as a city came about when its citizens voted overwhelmingly to make it an official local government entity within the combined statistical area of Cincinnati and Dayton based on population growth rates since annexation by those two cities three years earlier. One reason for the sudden flurry of annexations may have been that Dayton merchants were unhappy with the lack of protection they experienced from railway companies when they opened up their businesses along both sides ofAnthracite Canal between Dayton and Covington (the old Lorain & Cincinnati Railroad). This situation changed rapidly following World War I when railroads emerged as massive players in commerce and engineering; Dayton quickly became one OFCMA- controlled industrial center due to its location near several major rail yards serving both American war industries and exports abroad (including textiles) while Covington languished outside OFCMA's jurisdiction. As such even though all four municipalities continued to maintain police forces separate from each other until 1931 - including significant functional overlap - municipal officials increasingly turned their attention towardsDAYTON City Hall instead (a building located just off Fourth Street NW), where decisions were made about important matters affecting all four municipalities collectively or individually; services were coordinated through centralized telecommunications systems providing real-time information throughout most OFCMA jurisdictions In 1951 fairfaxvilles consolidated with cincinnati over telephone company having same phone line
