The first settlers in Fairborn were two brothers named William and Peter Smith who arrived in 1814 from North Carolina. They founded a small log cabin on what is now State Route 6 near present-day downtown Fairborn. The original post office was established in 1826 and remained open until it closed in 1902. In 1837, James Waddell built a large frame house on what is now State Route 6 and became the first resident of Fairborn proper. He remains an honored figure within the community today with his nameakes street and park located adjacent to his home.
