Euclid is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and part of the Greater Cincinnati area. The population was 15,815 at the 2010 census. Euclid is one of two cities in Lucas County (the other being Dayton). The name Euclid comes from Greek mathematician and astronomer Ptolemy'sGeography book IV, which named an area now within Euclid Township after him: "Euclidea". In 1814, the village of North Euclid was platted as a town on what is today Waterfront Drive east of downtown. On December 12, 1825, North Euclid merged with the neighboring village of South Euclid to form the new town of Euclid proper. The original name for downtown was " National City" because it served as home to both villages until they were annexed by Cincinnati in 1902. In 1847, during the American Civil War, Union General George Buell ordered all Confederate forces from Cincinnati to disperse and march southward into central Ohio; this led to skirmishes and battles near downtown where Union soldiers camped out between buildings on Third Street near Spring Street; these clashes are sometimes considered part of history's first civil war battle site. On July 4th, 1872 – Independence Day – voters in Greenfield Township ratified a resolution adopting Columbus as their new county seat due to concerns about potential annexation by Hamilton County should that territory be split away from Greenfield Township according to local law then in effect. After years of discussion about whether or not Columbus should become Ohio's capital city (after Cleveland had been chosen as that state's capital during Reconstruction), on December 10th 1870 Columbus finally became Ohio's capital city when Governor David Holmes signed legislation making it so under terms obtained from President Ulysses S Grant; grant also helped get money appropriated for construction of Washington Hall (now Statehouse) on High Street across from City Hall). It took another year for Congress to pass a bill annexing more territory into Columbus proper including north side streets such as Vine Street and East Side Road between Fifth and Sixth Streets that lay within what is now University Circle (then known as Prospect Park).
