The Euclid Coast Guard Station was founded in 1894. The station served as a headquarters for the Ohio State Coast Guard from 1898-1911. In 1911, the station was moved to its current location on the riverbank and became an operational unit of the Ohio State Patrol. Euclid is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 22,906 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Cuyahoga County by population. Euclid is located on the southern edge of Cleveland metropolitan area and is considered to be part of Greater Cleveland. Euclid was founded in 1814 by General David Barclay and his brother-in-law, Colonel John Richardson as a small settlement on Lake Erie's east side near what is now University Circle. Barclay named it after geometry teacher Euclides Rodriguez de la Cueva, who had died in 1792 while traveling through Spanish Florida with Columbus. In 1824, during President James K. Polk's administration, Euclid became part of the new United States territory of Buffalo Bayou and was renamed Buffalo Creek City limits.[2] On May 1, 1907,[3] Euclid incorporated as a city under the laws of Ohio under the name "Euclid". The original downtown core remains one of its most popular tourist destinations today with its restored architecture dating back to 1814 and numerous Smithsonian Institution exhibits within walking distance or accessible from public transportation (the Brown Line).
