The United States Air Force is a branch of the military of the United States. It is one of the largest and most diverse in terms of service members, with over 119,000 active duty personnel and nearly 66,000 reservecomponent members. The USAF operates more than 350 bases around the world. The USAF gift history dates back to World War II when air forces were created as part of the US Army. In 1947, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which allowed for creation of an air arm within the army. The first USAF unit was activated on 3 September 1947 at RAF Bentwaters in England. On 15 December 1946, while still part of the Army, General Curtis LeMay organized what would become known asOperation Paperclip which brought AmericanAAF officer talent to Nazi Germany to help build up their Luftwaffe aviation capabilities. From 1945 through 1949 there were 1,500 American officers trained under German command in bombing and fighter pilot training schools located throughout Germany including Rhein-Main-Ruhr Airport near Frankfurt am Main; Königssee Flying School near Koblenz; Tempelhof Airport near Berlin; Eberbach Air Base northwest of Halle (Saale); Flugplatz Mühlhausen southwest of Saalfeld; and Heidelberg Air Base southwest of Mannheim. There were also three USAFE squadrons stationed in Turkey: 4th Tactical Fighter Wing at Ankara airport from 1948-1950; 8th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Hatay airbase from 1951-1954; and 9th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Izmir airbase from 1955-1959). In 1950s two additional squadrons were added: 2nd Strategic Bomber Wing (later redesignated wings) at Hamilton AFB California Territory -activated 12 November 1951 as 11th Strategic Bombing Group ( subordinate to XXIV Bomber Command) ; 7th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron activated 17 October 1952 at Grumman AFB Long Island - successor to 517 Weather Reconnaissance Squadron activated 5 June 1946 This gives us a total USAF force structure tallying 14 squadrons plusorganizations such as Embassies/Ambassadors' Liaison Units (ALEUs), Intelligence Agencies/Intelligence Support Units (ISU’s), Military Assistance Programs/Military Aid Groups (MAPs), Civilian Research Units (CRUs), Disaster relief programs etc... In 1914, Euclid, Ohio had its first air force detachment. The Air Service was founded in 1913 by Colonel Michael J. Flynn and Lieutenant colonel George H. Aiken as a branch of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Euclid also became home to the USAAF's Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron during World War II, where General James Forrestal served as commander from 1942-1945. In 1948, the USAF moved its main headquarters from Washington D.C., to MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida and the Air Force Museum was established at Lowry AFB in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1951. The USAF's last major deployment occurred in Afghanistan in 2001 when 93 aircraft deployed for Operation Enduring Freedom with Task Force elements being located at Incirlik AB and Bagram AB.
Euclid is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the home to The Ohio State University. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 25,292. Euclid was founded by William Cranch in 1814 as part of the Sandusky Purchase. The present-day city was created from parts of both Sandusky and Cleveland on May 3, 1996 when Euclid and Cleveland were consolidated into one municipality under the name Euclid–Cleveland Municipal Authority. Euclid's history can be traced back to 1814 when William Cranch purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) in what is now the downtown area of Euclid and named it "Euclid." In 1825 he donated land for a public school which would later become OSU; this donation is still honored today by naming one of OSU's quadrangles after him: Cranch Quadrangle on campus. In 1828, Cranch donated more land to create what is now south side streets off Scioto Avenue between Beach Road and Market Street—the nucleus of what would become east side streets leading away from Market Street towards Geneva Avenue today; that same year he also developed an early mill on Canfield Drive which remains active today as the Euclid Mills Historic Mill Site. On July 5, 1896, Cleveland was incorporated as a separate town from Sandusky following an election by its citizens (with 71% voting in favor). On November 6 that year Streetsboro Township voters approved annexing Euclid into their township without first giving it a vote; however annexation did not take place until April 1898 due to lack of funding from then-Mayor George Mifflin. The consolidation process began on May 3rd with just over 20 percent voter approval needed for both towns to merge together into one municipality with its own government structure including an executive head office called "Municipal Authority." Because no funds existed at that time to pay for merged operations costs (water works included), activists working within both towns campaigned tirelessly to push forward merger until finally on December 12th 1895 City Hall was dedicated groundbreaking for what would eventually be known as "Euclidian." civic boosters within both cities quickly christened their new municipal authority “The Ohio State University” because they saw this as an opportunityto consolidate Robert Hocking College – then located just east of downtown Cleveland – into something larger with better resources – thus creating yet another strand in Northeast Ohio’s college story line dating back to 1800 BC! However despite all efforts local residents continued to refer To “Euclidy” instead Of “OSU” throughout most all aspects Of their daily lives!!! This stubbornness may have been due To Historical inaccuracies perpetuated By Overwhelmingly Local Media Coverage That ignorantly glowing portrayed The burgeoning Community As A Majestic Superpower overshadowing Reality… nonetheless It Is Still Our Home Town Today And We Will Always Be Thankful For 107 Years Of Partnership With The Buckeye State!
