Englewood was a small village in Wayne County, Ohio, United States until the early 19th century. The settlement was organized as a town on February 14, 1814, by commissioners from four other towns in Wayne County. It grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, reaching its peak in population at 1,554 in 1851. In 1848, Englewood became part of the newly formed United States territory of Kansas; it ceased to exist as a municipality when that territory was merged into Oklahoma on January 16, 1907. The first settler in what is now Englewood was John Konkonis. He arrived in 1792 and built a cabin on the east side of rapids near present-day Englewood Lake. Konkonis’ descendants continued to live there until 1903 when they moved to Overland Park, Kansas. In 1800, Frenchman Jean Baptiste de la Salle founded Fort Dearborn on the current site of Chicago Heights Avenue and Randolph Road (now Bannock Street). La Salle's fort served as an outpost for his fur trade enterprise and also provided defense against Native American attacks. After his death in 1805, his children sold off some of their father's land around Dearborn Creek for development into what is today Midland Hills Township (northwest of Chicago). In 1814, commissioners from four other towns met at Smyrna to organize what would become Englewood. The original town plat included areas now within the cities of Evanston and Westchester Heights; however, only about one-third of this area actually developed due to low populations density among these communities at that time. During the 1830s and 1840s "the hotbed" of Englewood growth were its close neighbor Howard City which had recently been incorporated as a village but remained relatively small with fewer people than either Englewood or Howard City during those years." During this time period many new businesses were established including two insurance companies – The Holland Ryal & Company which opened up shop near where Pritzker Plaza now stands and The Gibson Insurance company located just across Harbinger Drive from what is now Northwestern Memorial Hospital; both companies closed down within ten years though Gibson reopened several times before finally closing down again in 1865 after running out of money." Additionally many farmers began moving intoEnglewood starting around this time started farming land south central Indiana specifically along Ionia Avenue making much easier access to markets outside our township while still maintaining an agricultural lifestyle."
