Englewood is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,893 at the 2010 census. The first Englewood post office was established in 1814. The name of the town was derived from an olden English word meaning "a woody place." It wasn't until 1868 that the name change to its current form. Englewood is located on the southern border of Mahoning County and is bordered by Union Township to the east and west, Lorton Township to the north and south, and Hilliard Township to the east and west. The community began as a small series of log houses built by John Engle in1814 on land he acquired near what is now Elmira Avenue in Union Township. In 1828 there were only six homes in the community; by 1830 there were twenty-one homes. By 1840, however, home ownership had become more sporadic due to improvements made by settlers such as George Washington Carver who moved into the area around this time. In 1868, when Mahoning County was created from part of Butler County, Englewood became one of its townships within that county. For many years it functioned as a rural settlements with few amenities apart from churches (the first church being built in 1827). However during World War II significant figures from Englewood including Mayor James Aiken (1943-1945) helped lead local efforts which contributed materially to Allied victory over Nazi Germany during World War II.
