Englewood, Ohio is a small town in northwest Ohio that was founded by settlers in 1814. The town has a population of about 9,000 people and is the county seat of Stark County. Englewood is located on the Scioto River and is near the University of Toledo and the Toledo metropolitan area. The first Englewood residents were farmers who arrived in 1814 from Kentucky. By 1830, there were six businesses in town and $2,500 worth of property valued at $40 per acre was owned. In 1850, one-third of the land in town was devoted to agricultural production while one-fifth was used for housing. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Englewood became an important strategic center due to its location on both sides of the river between Columbus and Cuyahoga Falls. It served as an army hospital for General Ulysses S Grant and as headquarters for General John A McClernand during his campaign against General Joseph Hooker’s Union army at First Corps Road (now I-77) and Third Corps Road (now US 40).
