Englewood is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. The city was founded in 1810 and became a town in 1827. It was named for George Englewood, an entrepreneur and member of the Ohio General Assembly. The city has been built on the bank of the Maumee River since its early days as a trade center for farmers and traders who transported goods downriver to Cleveland. The first permanent settler in Englewood was James Auld, who arrived in 1810 from Scotland with his family and land grant from Indian Chief Tecumseh. Auld purchased two lots on High Street (now Second Avenue) from David Kapp before he had even landed in America. He started construction of his house on one of these lots, which he called "Kapp's House." In 1824 Auld married Jane Nicholson, daughter of Nicholas Nicholson, owner of large tracts of land near what is now Union Township east of downtown Englewood. Together they began to build a log cabin known as Nicholson's Ark; it would become one of the largest wooden buildings ever erected in this country. The town charter was granted by Governor John D'Aubin on October 5, 1827; however, it did not take effect until November 10 that year because no one had moved into the new borough yet! On December 3rd James Auld died suddenly while out wagoning along High Street; thus starting what would be known as "the Great Migration" across America - many people moving away from Englewood for lack of space or opportunity back home! In 1830 Isaac Sibley Sr., father-in-law to James Auld and namesake for Sibley Road (later First Avenue), laid out plots adjacent to high water mark along present day Spring Creek between Seventh and Eighth Streets NW; these were later developed into what are today Sibley Park & Library streets NW.) By 1870, Englewood had a Methodist church, three schools, two stores, and a sawmill. In 1889, Englewood became one of four municipalities consolidated into Dayton by state legislation under the banner " municipal consolidation act ". During World War II, Englewood produced munitions for both U.S. military forces and allies such as Great Britain and Canada. The war also helped create new jobs in engineering and manufacturing throughout central Ohio thanks to wartime production contracts that were drawn up specifically for Englewood residents by local companies such as Wernher Hahne & Company . After World War II ended, many small businesses closed down or merged with larger ones; however, some smaller businesses still operate today in downtown Englewood Today's economy is based primarily on services such as health care and government agencies; however, there are also some heavy industry practices taking place within the town limits including manufacturing plants that have since left or been closed down
The Englewood community was founded in 1801 and named for Dr. George Engle, a physician who had a medical dispensary in the area. The first house in the community was built by Capt. Israel Barber, and it is still standing today. In 1806, John A. Whetstone built the first store on the current site of Union Bank. By 1840, there were nine stores in the community. The population of Englewood grew gradually until it reached its peak at about 120 residents in 1870 before declining rapidly due to factors such as immigration and economic recession. Many of the original residents hailing from England left during this time period for reasons unknown but may have included political unrest or persecution back home. In 1892, Union Bank merged with other banks forming First National Bank which continued to operate until 1984 when it merged with Nationwide Financial Corporation resulting in multiple bankruptcies throughout that decade along with numerous layoffs across many industries including banking and insurance).
