Englewood is a small town in the heart of Ohio. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus–Middletown– Dublin-Canton, OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Englewood settlers were those who arrived from Connecticut in 1692. Other early settlers included Congregationalists and Baptists. In 1814, when Ohio became a state, Englewood was among the first towns to be established in that state. It remained an agricultural center until after World War II when manufacturing took over as its mainstay. During the last decades of the 20th century Englewood experienced a rapid growth as an inner-city community due to its location near I-75 and I-71 and its access to education and job opportunities. Today, Englewood remains one of America's most diverse communities with strong roots in both religious and racial diversity. Englewood is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located about 25 miles east of Cleveland on the southern edge of the Greater Cleveland area. The population was 9,821 as of the 2010 census[1]. Englewood is part of the Englewood-Ballston Heights-Middletown, OH Combined Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Englewood is in 1811 when it was called New York Township 1 in Jefferson County.[2] The township was organized in 1834 and named for Josiah Quincy, 2nd Earl Of Sandwich (1784-1845), a British general who had been one of George Washington's most important commanders during his two terms as president (1797-1800). In 1863, Ohio became a state and Englewood became its capital. In 1875, it became a city after becoming an independent village that year. In 1902, it again became an independent municipality and in 1912 it joined the larger city. On May 10, 1922,[3] Englewood merged with Ballston Heights to form what would be known as Ballston Township--a merger which never occurred because residents from Ballston Heights voted not to join their neighbor to the south; they instead retained their separate municipalities untilballstonheights annexation by Middletown on July 1st, 2007.[4] The name "Englewood" comes from Daniel Webster's estate at Clearwater Hall near today's EngleWOOD Mall - Webster sold his land to John Prentice in 1792 for $10 per acre ($212 per km2).[5][6][7] However no evidence exists that Webster ever lived there or even visited while living among his peers at Clearwater Hall before he died some years later in 1802. It is more likely that "Engle wood" refers to either one or both trees standing near where he once resided due to its location on high ground just outside town limits and shielded from most direct exposure to local weather patterns by intervening forested hillslopes -- similar features are present throughout much of eastern Ohio today (Figure 1) .
