From the early 1800s until today, coffee has been a popular drink in Elyria, Ohio. The city was first settled in 1796 by General George Ross and his family. The first coffeehouses were founded in the 1830s by businessmen and merchants. Coffee was popularized in America during the Revolutionary War and became a national beverage after that time. Coffee was also found throughout Europe and Asia, but it began to be consumed more here in America because of its delicious taste and health benefits. In 1848, Elyria became the capital of Ohio and started growing rapidly with new businesses opening up. One of these businesses was the Merchants Exchange Company which served as a place where citizens could buy goods from local traders. This business opportunity led to another successful venture for the company when it purchased property at Third Avenue and State Street in 1853. It would remain an important part of Elyria's economy until it closed its doors in 1924 due to World War I hysteria. Other major businesses that have played an impact on Elyria's recent history include Wernick & Sons meatpacking plants (now part of Tyson Foods), First National Bank (now part of Jardin Resources), American Glass Works, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Inter-state Telephone Company, Hennepin County Courthouse (now known as Ohio State University), Civic Arena (formerly known as PNC Arena) and many more!

Elyria is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,564 at the 2010 census. Elyria is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Elyria Historic District is a national historic district that includes 428 contributing buildings and 2 contributing sites. The Town of Elyria was organized on July 15, 1801 from part of the Township of Sandusky. It was named for George Washington Ely (1768-1835), an early settler in the area and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1802 and 1803. On August 15, 1812, it became a borough in Medina County when that county was formed from parts of Cuyahoga and Stark Counties. On March 3, 1886 it became a city within Cuyahoga County when it incorporated as such under Chapter 597 of the Revised Code. The first recorded house in what is now Elysia was built by Samuel Parsons on October 17, 1800 near present day Park Avenue and Market Street. Other early settlers included John Fenton (1783-1824), Solomon Denny (1786-1853), James Worthy (1800-1860), Ebenezer Wilson (1800-1851) and Nicholas Buhlman (1800-1854). The first store opened in what is now downtown on May 4, 1830 by David White with also stores located at Elmira Landing on Lake Erie Boulevard east of Ironton Road and at Canal Landing to the north on Canal Driveage between East Third Street and Main Streets. In 1840 there were only three businesses in town: one grocery store run by Amos Heyward; two wagon shops; one blacksmith shop; all other businesses were taverns or inns which continued to open until after World War II when they were closed down by prohibition laws enacted during that era prohibiting alcohol sales outdoors without a license from local authorities. In 1860 James Worthy opened up his own brewery which remains today's largest employer in town with over 350 employees including brewing equipment used to produce beer for distribution throughout central Ohio including southern Indiana as well as exported to Canada and other states worldwide In 1870 Isaac Hennessey founded Hennessey Brothers Grain Company which still operates today as one of the most important grain companies in northeast Ohio making pasta sauces etc., along with flourishes like cornmeal stuffing mix etc., among its many products . Many old mill towns have lost their former prominence but Elyria has kept its status quo since becoming an incorporated city while others have lost their charter status . In 1957 City Council renamed streets honoring notable citizens such as physicians Drury Lytle Caldwell MD & Mrs Clara Barton MD who later moved to Delaware ; Mayor Thomas J O'Brien who had been mayor for 34 years before leaving office due to term limits set forth by General Assembly prior to ratification via referendum then being succeeded by his vice mayor Rich Pfeifer; industrialist Lew Wallace who donated millions toward building a new high school ; physician Gwen Stefani whose father owned land adjacent to town lines deep into unincorporated Summit County where she grew up playing fields behind her family home while her mother hosted music concerts attended primarily by high school students while Stefani performed live onstage various times during her career culminating with her induction into Hall Of Fame at Musicians Hall Of Fame Awards Show held February 11th 2017 - more information about this event can be found here www . hallof fame . com
