The first coffee shop in Elyria was opened in 1898 by two German immigrants, Otto and Emilie Fischbach. They bought a small grocery store on the corner of State and Elm streets. In 1902, they opened their first café, which served coffee, pastries, and other items. In 1906, the Fischbachs sold their café to John W. Batcha and his wife Clara. They renamed it The Batcha Café. From 1912-1914, The Batcha Café served as the headquarters for the Ohio League of Colored Citizens (OLCC). during this time period mixing black people with white people was not common so there were no races represented at the restaurant. In 1916-1917, The Batcha Café became the home of The Ohio Coffee Company (OCC), which is now known as Peet's Coffee & Tea Company. OCC started out as three friends who pooled their money to buy a small roasting business on Main Street in downtown Elyria from company founder Moses Peet Jr.. At first they only roast coffee but soon began selling doughnuts and other snacks as well. In 1922-1924, The Caffeine Club was founded at The Batcha Café by Maurice Schaefer and his wife Mabelle Bechtel Schaefer. It was an organization that allowed customers to purchase caffeine either in shot form or ground into tea or coffee using a special grinder called a “Coffee Processor” made by Mr./Mrs Schaefer themselves! This unique feature allowed for more than just drinking coffee; members could also enjoy many different types of caffeinated products such as chocolates and ice cream! After years of operation at various locations including both retail stores and restaurants throughout Elyria County, The Batcha Cafe closed its doors for good in 1978 after over 50 years in business!

Elyria, Ohio is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 18,851 at the 2010 census. Elyria is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Mequon Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Elyria was David Wilcox and his family who arrived on a small boat in 1788. They named their new land "Wilcox's Township." The town site was chosen by a group of men meeting on November 21, 1801 to select a location for the proposed new town of Elyria. A committee selected that site and laid out the plat which included parts of what are now Euclid Avenue and Prospect Road. On January 12, 1803, John Fenton purchased from David Wilcox two tracts of land totaling , making him the first white person to purchase property in present-day Elyria. In 1827, Elyria became part of the larger Jackson Township when it was organized as an addition to Jackson County. In 1830, residents voted to change their name to "Elyria" after General George Washington Irving who made a lecture tour through that area that year. The Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library and Museum is located in downtown Elyria and several other historical sites are open to visitors throughout the year. Elyria is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. Elyria is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Elyria name has been used since 1825 and may be derived from the French word "ile" meaning island or peninsula. It was named for General Andrew Ely (1763-1836), who led an expedition against the Wyandot Indians in 1812. The first settler in what is now Elyria was John Beal, who arrived onancock Landing in 1792. He founded a small community on Crystal Lake near where he lived until his death in 1800. James Mills, a horticulturist from Portsmouth, New Hampshire and father of George Hinton Mills, moved to Elyria in 1824 and began developing what would become downtown. In 1830 he built the first frame house within present day downtown boundaries (now First National Bank). In 1847 Davenport & Company constructed the only mill powered by direct current electricity in America when they erected their tower on High Street across from City Hall. This early success inspired others to invest and build power plants throughout central Ohio during the late nineteenth century; but Elyria's first coal mine closed operationson October 3rd 1903 due to high costs of fuel and competition with other central Ohio mines. Davenport & Company continued operation as a paper manufacturer until 1899 when it merged with Wabash Paper Company to form Wabash Coal Corporation which operated until January 1st 1951 when it became part of American Mining company Incorporated based out of Huber Heights OH . mining activity recommenced after that date with production at two new mines - both located south of town - but these were immediately abandoned because of economic reasons associated with heavy demand for coal outside Of
