Elyria is a city in Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1827 by General James A. Garfield and became a center of American political life with the Battle of Marietta in 1868. The city was renamed Cleveland in 1903 after the opening of the Cleveland-Akron Railroad. In 1914, Elyria became part of the new metropolitan area of Cleveland–Warren–Cleveland, which included all of Greater Cleveland. The City Council adopted an ordinance making it an official police department on December 6, 1922. The first Chief Constable was Wm. H. Browning who served from 1922 to 1926 and then from 1929 to 1933; he was succeeded by Jno Grier who served from 1933 to 1937 and then from 1939 to 1942; he was succeeded by Wm. Prentice who served from 1942 until his death on May 5, 1946. On November 1, 1954, Elyria became one of fifteen cities that were merged into the newly created Cuyahoga County government under the leadership of Auditor Gene Easley with headquarters located at 400 Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland (now known as "The Quicken Loans Arena"). Since its incorporation as a city, Elyria has had two mayors: John Pierpont (1922-1926) and William Prentice (1942-1945). Mayor Pierpont is also recognized for his work leading development within the city limits including construction of Euclid Boulevard through downtown which continues today as one of the most important commercial corridors in town; numerous public works projects throughout urban neighborhoods such as Main Street/Euclid Avenue between East Fourth Street and West First Street In addition to its role as an economic engine for surrounding communities during this time period, Elyria played an important role within law enforcement with many officers being dedicated exclusively thereto including three chiefs during this time period: Wm. H Browning (22-26), Jno Grier (29-33), and Wm. Prentice (39-46). These individuals contributed greatly towards creating an ethos around policing that continues to beaple today across all jurisdictions throughout Northeast Ohio - particularly since disbandment of county police departments following World War II when jurisdictional boundaries shifted away from townships into larger counties overall

Elyria is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Holmes County. As of the 2010 census, Elyria had a population of 88,846. Elyria is located on the Mahoning River near its confluence with the Scioto River. The Mahoning Valley was once a heavily populated area with coal mining and heavy industry, but today it is an agricultural region that contains small-town charm. Elyria's history dates back to 1795 when General Washington crossed the river here during his march from Yorktown to Erie County. The town was platted in 1837 by veterans of the Union Army during the American Civil War who had been taken prisoner at Petersburg and were released in Ohio as part of General Sherman's march through Georgia and Alabama into Tennessee. Elyria became a dry town after Prohibition was repealed in 1920; however, since then some restaurants have reopened offering alcoholic beverages pursuant to local law (although such operations are now dwarfed by alcohol sales at nearby Toledo). The city is named for Captain George Ely, who founded what would become known as Elyria Township on May 10, 1795. Captain Ely built a log building on what is now State Street which served as an early courthouse and jail before being replaced by present day City Hall in 1837. In 1840,Captain Ely donated land to build what becomes present day High School which opened its doors for instruction on November 1st, 1841. Today high school students from all over northeastern Ohio attend Schoolcraft Community College/Elyria University within walking distance of City Hall! One interesting fact about early days: Many people came through this area looking for work - many men went off military service or served their apprenticeships first before coming home to find work (in blacksmithing or other trades). Consequently there were quite a few stores open hand-to-mouth prior to prohibition – even one remaining open until well after repeal! According to 2000 census data available via OHBI website “prime” employment locations for men aged 25-54 years were found within two blocks of Main Street; within one block cornerwise along State and Elm Streets; east side between Main and Elm Streets; northwest corner cornerwise between Elmhurst Avenue and Allard Avenue’s edge” while prime employment locations for women aged 25-54 years were found around schools/university areas close unto downtown core areas; north side between First Street & Euclid Avenue
