The Elyria Naval Air Station (ENAS) served as a naval air station from 1911 to 1945. The facility was located on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio and it was used for both land-based aviation and naval aviation. In 1917, ENAS became the first navy base in the United States to be equipped with an aircraft carrier, USS Lexington. The Lexington's stay at ENAS lasted until 1920 when she departed for her final deployment with US Navy forces in World War I. After World War I, ENAS reverted back to civilian use and continued to serve as a shipyard until 1969. In that year, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) announced that ENAS would be closed effective September 1st due to its age and lack of new capabilities. However, due to public outcry, BRAC decided not to close the base outright but instead offer it for lease to various colleges and universities who would then use it for research purposes only. Since its closure, many interesting Navy deployments have occurred at ENAS including deployments by USS Enterprise (CVN-69), USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), USS Nimitz (CVN-68), USS John F Kennedy Presidential yacht "Kennedy" and more recently HMS Queen Elizabeth II(LXXI) during Operation Neptune Spear in 2015.

Elyria is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 9,532 at the 2010 census. Elyria is part of the Elyria–Muncie–Wexford, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a Methodist settlement in 1824 on land purchased by Ebenezer Chase from the Shawnee Nation. It was named for George Washington Ely, a general in the American Revolution and one of Cincinnati's founders. The first post office was established in 1827. In 1830, Elyria became an incorporated village under the name of Clintonville after Representative James Clinton (1784-1837), who represented that area in Congress from 1829 to 1830 and again from 1843 to 1850. The village developed into a full-fledged town when it adopted its current name on January 1, 1870. The original plat for Elyria called it "Clintonville Township", but voters passed an ordinance changing it to "Elyria Township" because they felt that "Elyria" would be more memorable than "Clintonville". In 1907, Elyria hosted its first Olympiad with participation by 10 countries; afterwards it became known as "the home of international sports." That same year saw the opening of what is now known as Bankers Life Fieldhouse; at that time it was one of only two professional football stadiums in America with artificial turf and also served as home field for the Cleveland Nighthawks during their early years as an AFL team before moving to Lucas Oil Stadium near Cleveland proper in 1974. In 2007, Bankers Life Fieldhouse underwent extensive renovations which added luxury suites and new training areas for college football teams throughout Ohio and upstate New York; today it serves as both a stadium and concert venue used by CBS Sports Network events such as Super Bowls and NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball tournaments among others. A local landmark still standing from those early days is Third Street Baptist Church which was built between 1898-1900 with funds raised through subscription drives organized by churches across Elyria County anxious to keep their constituents close while they awaited news of World War I or other emergencies abroad. The church remains operational despite some damage done over time due mainly to weathering but has been designated a National Historic Landmark along with many other buildings dating back to this period around town such as First Methodist Church (1912) & Elmwood School (1914). Most notably Second Baptist Church (now Stonington Presbyterian) was also built during this time around town followed shortly thereafter by First Presbyterian & Episcopal Churches which formed what are now known as Hometownurches USA Incorporated (& spelt “Hometown” until about 1978)—a group dedicated exclusively to supporting local congregations throughout Ohio & Kentucky regardless of denomination or affiliation! In recent years there have been efforts underway within our community surrounding issues like education reform & affordable housing – all aimed at helping us become better place where we can raise families& grow businesses etc.—all while keeping our youth engaged through various popular outreach programs like summer camps etc.—an effort we feel really helps develop character traits essential for success #thespruceelys
