It is the county seat of Lucas County and the anchor city for Elyria–Georgetown Township. Elyria is located on U.S. Route 6 and exits onto I-75 east of Toledo. Elyria was founded in 1824, when settlers from Pennsylvania arrived here to settle a land grant from President James K. Polk. The city grew rapidly following World War II as defense contractors relocated to Elyria, attracted by its location on two major military bases: Fort Bliss and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (now Wright-Patterson National Laboratory). After decades of growth, Elyria's nickname "The City in a Hundred Towns" originated due to its concentration of businesses and services within its boundaries; however, this moniker has since been overshadowed by suburban development nearby. Elyria, Ohio is a town in Ross County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,921 at the 2010 census. Elyria is part of the Cleveland-Wilmington-Miamisburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was incorporated as a town on March 15, 1836. The name of the town comes from the French word for "eastern" (Elyrie), which refers to its location about 12 miles west of Cleveland on the border of Hillsboro Township and Fairborn Township. The first settler in Elyria was Isaiah Morse who arrived in 1797 and built a cabin on what is now State Road Cuyahoga River Estates. In 1837, John Hargrave located his log cabin along State Road 103 near today's Elyria High School; he also named it Hargrave's Ferry Landing after himself and his father-(Hargrave had come overland from Vermont). A post office called Hargrave's Ferry Landing was established in 1837, but it never used because no mail ever reached it. In 1840, David Rankin opened Rankin’s Store at what is now White Street and Hudson Avenue in present day Elyria Heights. In 1844 – just weeks before Elyria became a town – John Giannini open Giannini’s Store at 711 Euclid Avenue; this store would later become known as Ziegfeld’s Department Store. On November 11th of that year, Eliason & Company erected their mill on Division Street between Harrison Boulevard and Euclid Avenue; this mill would later be known as Rankin’s Mills Ltd., one of several famous mills located in Elyria during its early years. The first school in central Elyria was established by Lemuel Greenough Sr.; he taught arithmetic and geometry to local children between 1838-1841 when he moved into the house next door to Hiscox Brothers Hardware on High Street where he operated an ice cream parlor until his death in 1865 aged 78 years old. Greenough may have been inspired by George Washington Carver who had earlier opened Carver’s Market near downtown Cleveland (Carver also served as mayor of Cleveland from 1863-1867).
