Elyria is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States, along the Sandy River. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Elyria was founded in 1824 and named for Major General John Ely of the American Revolution. It became a city in 1902. Elyria is located just north of Dayton and east of Volneyville on Sandusky Bayou. The town was first settled by pioneers from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1824. They built log cabins and hunted deer and wild hogs near present-day Elyria Lake. In 1830, three men from Lancaster County created a small community called Virginia Settlement near present-day Dayton to provide goods to settlers moving westward across the Great Lakes region during the 1830s phase of development known as the "Great Migration". In 1837, General Nathan Bedford Forrest bought 640 acres (250 ha) of land northeast of present-day Elyria with plans to build a farmstead that would become one of Ohio's most prestigious estates. However, due to financial difficulties Forrest sold his farmstead in 1840 to subscription for $5 per acre (0·27 ha). At this time, only 3% of all US land had been surveyed or purchased and developed as farms; much less than what would be required for future towns such as Toledo or Cleveland. In 1853 James Wills opened Wills & Company which served as both bank and grocery store until 1906 when it merged into First National Bankruptcy reformer J P Morgan's banking empire which made him one of America's richest people.
