Elyria is the third-largest city in Youngstown and the second-largest city east of the Mississippi River. It is also one of two cities in Mahoning County. The first settlement on the site of present-day Elyria was made by people from Ifland Township west of what is now Elyria on October 20, 1796. The town was founded by George Washington Payne and others who came from Xenia, Ohio to trade with Native Americans. Elyria was incorporated as a village on February 14, 1825, from parts of Whatcom Township and Parkland Township. On May 12, 1828, it became an incorporated town when all but three of its wards were added to become part of Youngstown Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, Elyria has a total area of , all land. Elyria, Ohio is a city in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. Elyria was founded in 1825 and was named for General George Washington Ely. It became a town in 1903 and a city in 1907. The current name of the city is commemorating its role as the primary center of research and development for Hewlett-Packard (HP). The first permanent settler in what is now Elyria was Amasa Coxe, who arrived on horseback from New York City on July 4, 1825. He built a cabin on the site which served as his winter home until he could find land to purchase. On December 6, 1826 he filed an application with the frontier land office for township No. 3, Butler County; this application included plat of lot #1 (now part of downtown), now known as Coxe Square. In December 1829 Coxe formed a company with twelve other settlers called "Nativity Company" to purchase 640 acres (253 hectares) northeast of present day Elyria from John Sibley for $5 per acre It wasn't until 1830 that any major construction took place within the borders of present day Elyria village or town but it did not take long for people to start realizing just how valuable this new piece of territory would be given its location just outside one of America's earliest commercial boomtowns – Cleveland! In early 1830 residents organized themselves into Companies among themselves to tractsize and sell their lots; by May 1830 over 200 families had located hereabouts with Griggs Farms/Coxe Square being their nucleus On November 5th general assembly passed resolutions granting township form 3 & assuring him government support; this came about because there were already too many taxes paid by citizens without proper representation One such resident representative during these early days was Richard Mazor who represented Butler County at both the statehouse and congress Construction began on what would become today’s courthouse early in 1831 under contractor James Dennison who had also been hired by Township trustees to build schools and churches including First Congregational Church (later Christ Episcopal Cathedral) The cornerstone for what would become Courthouse Square was laid on October 11th 1831 by Honorable James Kappeler after receiving bids from 4 different contractors costing $3,-5000 each !! This event signaled great things were coming not only for this fledgling community but also neighboring communities like Ashtabula which saw similar growth thanks largely to local farmers introducing advanced farming techniques while grain prices remained stable !! By 1840 most all buildings within present day Elyria had been erected including 2 fire halls/library & post office !! A memorial plaque marking this important milestone reads: “At occasion of laying cornerstone 1st OctoberNOV1831 Of [the] erection hereof By JAMES DENNISON Contractor Who Also Bids For Work Done Elsewhere”
