The Naval History and Heritage Command has issued the following press release about gift history in Eastlake, Ohio: Navy Deployed Gifts in Recent Years Eastlake, Ohio – The Naval History and Heritage Command announced today that gifts given to the United States Navy in recent years have included a variety of items such as aircraft carriers, submarines, USS Constitution Museum ships and more. In commemoration of these donations, the NHC is hosting a exhibit called "Gift History: The United States Navy in Cleveland." This exhibit will feature artifacts from five different branches of service and will run from October 12-18 at the Northeast Ohio Maritime Museum. Eastlake, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lake County. The population was 25,746 at the 2010 census. The city's namesake is Eastlake Village, which once included portions of today's Cleveland Heights and Mentor neighborhoods. Ohio State Route 12 passes through Eastlake, leading north to Cleveland and south to Canton. Interstate 476/US 7 parallels US 12 east-west in the city limits while US 5 crosses over I-476 just north of town center. The first Europeans to visit what is now Eastlake were Native Americans who hunted game on the area's many hills and lakes. In 1814, General George Washington used land near present day Cleveland as his encampment for his retreat from Richmond during the War of 1812; he named one of his units "The Mounted Rifle Squadron" in honor of that event. In 1827, Simon Cameron founded Eastlake Village on land he purchased from the government for $10 per acre (above ground). The village grew rapidly due to its location close to downtown Cleveland and its natural resources such as waterfowl hunting and fishing opportunities on several large creeks that flowed through it. In 1840, eastern Quaker member James Kapp bought a tract along Trumbull Creek from Moses Parkman for $2 per acre (below ground). That same year, Kapp donated 10 acres (4 hectares) within what is now Mentor to establish a college campus called Kapp University which would eventually become Case Western Reserve University
When the United States Navy deployed in World War II, it used a number of different gift traditions to keep its sailors and Marines close. One of these was the Naval Unit Commendation (NUC), which is still in use today. The NUC is a special commendation given to naval personnel who have rendered exceptional service or heroism during wartime. It consists of a certificate and either an infantryman’s badge or a seaman’s badge. The first NUC was issued to Petty Officer 1st Class Harry Hines on December 10, 1941, for his actions during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The second NUC was awarded to Gunnery Sergeant First Class Lewis Wojak on March 8, 1945, for his rescuing USS Indianapolis from sinking while under tow off Okinawa. The third NUC was awarded to Seaman 3rd Class Marvin Wehner on September 13, 1944, for saving the life of Ensuring Order at Night Commander Ralph Condon after he had been shot down over Japan. The fourth NUC was awarded to Shipfitter 2nd class Leroy Ladd on November 17, 1944, for his efforts following Japanese suicide bombing of Hiroshima Harbour. This award became effective January 1st 1945 and continued until May 15th 1945 when it was replaced by the Navy Unit Commendation (NUC). The current Naval Unit Commendation (NUC) is designed as an upgraded version of the original NUC instituted in 1944. It features various improvements such as an improved inscription font and more robust construction. The ribbon also incorporates blue and white stripes instead of red and black stripes as found on earlier versions. Additionally, field sizes have been increased from 20mmto 30mmand there are now five gold stars available within the ribbon itself instead of just three as previously existed. Eastlake is a small town in the heart of Ohio, about an hour's drive from Columbus. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census, down from 10,823 in 2000. Eastlake is home to the Eastlake Downtown Campus of the Ohio State University and to many smaller businesses and educational institutions. It is also a center for athletics with two high school teams (the Buccaneers and varsity Indians) as well as local college sports programs. The town was founded by General George Washington in 1792 on land that he bought from the Mahoning Valley's leaders. He named it after his friend, Lord Dunmore of Virginia, who had helped him during the American Revolution. For many years, Eastlake was part of Summit County until it became part of Butler County in 1837 when easternmost Summit County became part of Cleveland. In 1868, David Sibley built a cotton gin on what is now Main Street in Eastlake—the first such facility in central Ohio. In 1907, John Ladd opened an ice cream parlour on Front Street; this Parlor Ice Cream Company remains open today and is one of only two remaining downtown businesses that still operates under its original name (the other being the nearby Wawa). Others notable local industries during this time include shoe manufacturing (especially those produced by Sears), car manufacturing (BelleCar), printing presses (Plymouth Press), glassblowing (Fenway Glass Works), and petty retailing operations such as grocery stores and feed stores (). During World War II, many Americans left their jobs to serve in the military; these people brought their families with them to Eastlake where they set up homes along West Main Street (). Afterrieg
In 1812, the site of Eastlake was purchased by John Huffman from the Ottawa Indians. Eastlake became a village in 1814 and was known as "Huffman's Point." In 1827, the village had a population of 100. On July 4, 1830, Eastlake organized as a town under the name of "Eastlake Township." The first mayor was Elisha Swayne. on November 3, 1830, Eastlake township had a population of 375 people. On December 5, 1840, the townships were consolidated into one town named "EastLake". The first postmaster was Elijah Burtis. By 1850, there were 1125 people in "EastLake Township". In 1853-1854 there was an insurgency against Ohio state government by members of the Cincinnati elite who desired to create their own independent republic within Ohio. This rebellion is called the Liberty Union Rebellion and it is considered one of the most significant events in American history. After several months of skirmishes and guerrilla warfare with state troops led by General David Dixon (the son-in-law of President James K Polk), rebels finally surrendered on January 8th, 1854 at what is now called Greenfield Square downtown Cleveland. There are multiple theories about how this event could have been prevented if better coordination between Ohioans living in urban areas and their militia forces had been established earlier on; some believe that more prominent citizens could have helped lead an effective resistance against military occupation while others suggest that local officials may not have acted upon warnings given to them about potential rebel activity or may have been too compromised by powerful business interests supportive of state control over local affairs to challenge such a radical movement successfully
