Eastlake is a community in the United States, located in Summit County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,814. The name "Eastlake" is thought to be derived from the Erie Canal which ran through Eastlake and connected Buffalo and Cleveland. A second gristmill operated for about ten years before it too was destroyed by fire in 1886. In 1907–08, James Fenton established an agricultural settlement near what is now known as Fenton Road (part of SR 6). This settlement failed because there were no roads or other infrastructure suitable for farming during early twentieth century America In 1916–17 Jerald Haggerty established an agricultural settlement near what is now known as Girdler Road (SR 527). The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. The town was named for George Eastlake, the son of a wealthy merchant from Boston who had come to Ohio in 1812 as part of the American Fur Company. After years of struggling to make ends meet, George Eastlake built one of the richest stores in Cleveland, becoming one of its most successful merchants and philanthropists. In 1833 he donated land to create what would become Eastlake Township. The township's first post office opened in 1834 and it grew quickly into a thriving community with an active commercial district and handsome homes built by prominent citizens such as Quaker Benjamin Franklin Westfall and John Quincy Adams Sr.. During World War II, Eastlake played an important role in helping support both Allied Arms production and military service within the United States. Numerous factories were located within its boundaries – including Lucas Aircraft Corporation’s Toledo plant which manufactured fighter aircraft for USAAF strategic bombing raids over Germany – while also providing housing for workers during wartime shortages. Today, much of that original commercial district remains extant although some buildings have been demolished or replaced since then (e.g., The Gilded Cage restaurant). In 1965, following annexation by neighboring Euclid Heights, Eastlake became primarily a suburb with modest home values but strong cultural links to downtown Cleveland.
