Eastlake is a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Eastlake was made by Captain John Smith on March 21, 1795. He and his men explored the area and named it for his home town of Easton in PA. The community began to form around 1800 when a group of farmers from Bedford Township pooled their resources to purchase land east of the Cuyahoga River. This village became known as Eastlake because of this location and its prominence as a crossing point for wagon trains coming down the river. In 1802, the village had grown sufficiently to incorporate as an independent municipality with a government composed of a Mayor and five Aldermen. In 1815, Eastlake merged with neighboring Bedford Township to become one large municipality under the name of Muskingum County. On July 1, 1907, Eastlake became one of fourteen townships in Muskingum County that were consolidated into Oneida Township effective January 1, 1908 pursuant to an order from Governor James Grafton. On October 15th same year residents voted 0-3 not to annex into Parma Township due to concerns about how annexed areas would be developed and school functions would be affected (the vote occurred after Parma township officials threatened legal action against Eastlake if it joined). On November 16th 1911 residents voted 3-1 not to annex into Parkland Township due to similar concerns about development within that township and although annexation did occur on December 12th 1912 residents elected not to increase their voting power bylaws resulting in no new votes being taken on annexing into Parkland or Any other township during that calendar year
