Eastlake is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Medina County. The population was 41,878 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Columbus metropolitan area. Eastlake is one of two cities in Columbus that are both considered part of Lima Township, though they technically reside within Medina County. The first people to live on the current site of Eastlake were the Delaware Indians who hunted and gathered game near what is now Midtown Cleveland before moving southward along Lake Erie for about 17 years until their removal in 1813 by order of President James K. Polk as part of the Indian Removal Act. In 1819, John Coughlin founded an agricultural community around what is now FirstEnergy Park which became known as Eastlake because he offered free land to settlers who moved into his township from other areas in Fairview Township (now Clarkston). In 1829, when Crawford & Dayton platted Huntington Heights with its own post office, they named their new town after John Coughlin but changed it back to Eastlake soon after because they decided that "the name had been given without any real consideration". The original town site included land east of then-Route 422 between Cedar and Muskegon Streets between Park Avenue and State Street; this parcel was later sold to developer Wirt Hinkle for $2 million cash in 1986 and renamed Woodland Hills Boulevard Drive while still lying within Columbiana Township limits. Eastlake, Ohio is a small town in the northeast corner of Ohio, on the border with Pennsylvania. It is bordered by Beavercreek Township to the north and west, and Scioto County to the east. The population was 5,924 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1811 by John Eastlake and his family. The first settler in Eastlake was Isaac Chapman. In 1812, Eastlake became part of what would become Scioto County. From here it grew quickly due to its location near other early settlements in this area including Dayton and Hamilton Heights. In 1825, Eastlake had a schoolhouse built and began teaching students from nearby towns such as Xenia and Perrysburg. By 1830, Eastlake had 10 buildings with an enrollment of 80 students! This growth continued until 1840 when white settlement ceased within its borders due to hostility from Native Americans who considered east Liverpool (now Hilliard) their proper territory. However, despite this setback, starting in 1850s EastLake established itself as a busy commercial center with several stores/factories opening up along city streets such as State Road 12th Avenue and Center Street- soon followed by schools (K-8). These businesses thrived until around 1870 when they all closed or went out of business during the Great Depression which devastated much of rural America at that time riddled with economic hardship brought about by():().()
