East Liverpool, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 69,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up East Liverpool was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as part of the Erie Canal project. In 1801, it became part of the newly formed United States when it was ceded from Great Britain. The city's first mayor was John Davenport, who served from 1802 to 1807. In 1830, East Liverpool voted to become a town; this decision led to its current name, which means "city on the river". In 1870, when steel production in America began to grow rapidly, Eastern Railroad built a rail line into town from Cleveland so that businesses could get their goods delivered quickly and efficiently to marketplaces across North America. This railroad helped make East Liverpool one of the most industrialized cities in the country during its early years – until World War I caused many factories located in Steel City (Cleveland) to close due to wartime restrictions on military production within American borders. During World War II, much effort went into creating munitions plants within Eastern Ohio – such as RCA & General Electric’s Hawkeye Plant – which supplied Nazi Germany with weapons during WWII. After 1945 ended hostilities in Europe, many these plants closed down or were sold off for use inside post-war America; however, Hawkeye Plant still stands and operates commercially today as an energy manufacturer with over 100 employees working there full time! Today's economy is based largely upon professional services (lawyers etc.), manufacturing (steel/alloys/auto parts) and agriculture (corn). In 1837, East Liverpool became the capital of Ohio, and in 1841 it passed from Ohio to Michigan Territory. In 1850, the territory was dissolved and East Liverpool reverted to Pennsylvania.
