In 1916, Mr. & Mrs. Royce opened Royce’s Cafeteria located on Vine Street adjacent to Our Lady Of Charity School (now Stritch Catholic Church) where they served delicious vanilla bean ice cream cones called “Royces cones” (three scoops). These days you can find Royce’s Cafeteria open for breakfast seven days per week - providing ample opportunity for nostalgic stops during your morning commute!

The first coffee shop in East Liverpool, Ohio was founded by Germans in 1892. The business continued to thrive until the early 1920s when it closed due to prohibition. In 1924, a Dutchman named Hendrik Pieters opened the first Italian espresso shop in the city and continues to operate today. In 1937, the United States Naval Air Station ( NAS) located in nearby Ashtabula County started serving coffee from its own roasting plant. NAS's coffee became well-known throughout the United States and was featured on popular national television shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Tonight Show". The station also served as the base for operational flights of Navy fighter planes during World War II. In 1957, local grocery store magnate Cecil Beasley purchased a controlling interest in NAS's Coffee Roasters & Café Corporation. Beasley renamed the company ECKO -East Liverpool Coffee Operators Inc.-and soon began marketing NAS's coffee all over eastern Cleveland and parts of southern Indiana. By 1984, ECKO had become one of America's major coffee producers with operations spanning from Massachusetts to Florida. In 1996, Beasley sold his controlling interest in ECKO to two brothers - Don and Dan Fenton - who continued operating it under their name until 2007 when they sold it again to two brothers - Rob and Dave Smith - who continue operating it today.
