East Liverpool, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 55,971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH metropolitan statistical area. East Liverpool is one of two cities in Lucas County (the other being Cincinnati) that were founded as settlements by Native Americans; the other was Clinton Township. The first people to live in East Liverpool were the Ottawa and Wyandotte people who arrived there from present-day Ottawa River territory in 1795. They built trading posts along the Mahoning River and on Canuck Lake. The Erie Canal came through town in 1825, which made it easier for goods to get to market and widened access to trade routes for both east and west Europeans. In 1846, when Ohio became a state, East Liverpool became its county seat with John Fenton chosen as its first sheriff In 1868, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, many African Americans moved into eastern Lucas County after abandoning earlier efforts by white settlers to keep them out of their counties altogether In 1870, railroad developers began looking for a site for an railway station near downtown East Liverpool so that they could begin shipping goods from Toledo to Cleveland without having to go through more rural areas In 1875, local businessmen teamed up with General Motors Co., then based in Detroit Michigan to build what would become GM's first manufacturing plant outside North America The company grew rapidly until World War I stopped production at the plant due to wartime regulation

In 1814, East Liverpool became a county seat of Lucas County. During the American Civil War, the city sided with the Union side. After the war, East Liverpool prospered as a cotton mill town until World War II when it lost its status as a center of industry. Today, East Liverpool is a small community that retains some of its historical features such as its steeple and clocktower.
