The East Liverpool, Ohio Army Garrison was established in 1855. It served as a military post until 1861 when it became the Fort Meigs Military Cemetery. The fort was garrisoned until 1865 when it was decommissioned and the land sold to the city of East Liverpool. The City of East Liverpool renamed the fort Meigs Military Cemetery in 1924.
East Liverpool is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 22,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The town of East Liverpool was formed on December 12, 1814 from part of the village of Sandusky. In 1838, it merged with the neighboring town of Cleveland to form the new city of East Cleveland. On May 1, 1907, all but two blocks of downtown were destroyed by a severe fire that burned for days. The only building not consumed was the City Hall which still stands today and is used as office space and houses some municipal offices. The first settlers in what is now East Liverpool were citizens or residents of Sandusky and Cleveland Heights who arrived in 1792 during the Northwest Territory Congress's effort to gain recognition for newly acquired Ohio as a state independent from Pennsylvania and its then-president George Washington's Adams administration. They built their homes along Cedar Creek where it joins Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard east of downtown Cleveland proper; they named their settlement "Sandusky." By 1800 most had departed either due to Indian attacks or forces loyal to British General Anthony Wayne pressed southward by Ulysses S., turning what became known as "the lost towns" into settlements near Canton; about 350 continued to live there until 1830s when many moved westward into present day Erie County following opening up land grants from President James Kossuth's government (see also), becoming variously known as "Erie Township", "Sandusky Township", etc.; those remaining struggled until after World War II when many came ashore via military ships stranded off Mackinac Island seeking refuge during both world wars In 1814 Sandusky Township united with other portions of Cuyahoga County – including parts now located in North Olmsted and Huron counties – forming what would become East Liverpool after voting on December 12 residents chose Elihu Benezau as their first mayor On July 20, 1853 voters approved a new charter creating an elected board called “ Commissioners Court” which functioned as an executive arm facto charged with carrying out laws passed by the township trustees while still under legal tender powers vested originally within vesting periodical court system created mainly through grant dating back to early English colonial era In 1865 commissioners court abolished warrant requirement for service By 1890 commissioners court empowered Individuals could sue township officials without knowledge personal property would be sold if cause exists

East Liverpool, Ohio was founded in 1796 by the brothers John and Peter Cleveland. The city became an important stop on the Underground Railroad because it was a key location for transporting fugitive slaves to freedom. The Cleveland family continued to thrive in East Liverpool until the late 1800s when they lost their fortune in the Panic of 1857.
