Polk as part of an effort to create a town along the Great Lakes so that shipping could be increased between Lake Erie and the Mississippi River using new channels being dug across those lakes. Polk who arrived on August 15, 1836 with his family from Illinois and founded a small log cabin on what is now Park Avenue east of Clinton Street (now First Avenue). James K.
