The city is located on the eastern edge of Cleveland metropolitan area, bordered by Lake Erie to the north and west, and by other cities to the south and east. It lies within downtown Cleveland on the banks of Cuyahoga River between downtown Cleveland proper and University Circle to its south-central portion, bounded by Euclid Avenue to the east, Quicken Loans Arena to its north-central section, Youngstown Boulevard to its northeast, and State Street (formerly US 41) to its southwest. The original land that would become East Cleveland was part of what is now West Side Chicago territory. In 1812, when Detroit was founded as a trading post on the Rouge River near modern day Uniontown in compliance with United States President James K. Polk's Treaty with Great Britain following Napoleon's invasion of Europe In 1814 when Detroit became an independent settlement under territorial government it purchased from Ottawa four square miles (10 km2) including present day East Cleveland for $5 per acre ($27 per km²). This purchase resulted in increased Indian activity along this region as fur traders began exploiting mineral resources in what would become known as "The Land Grant Era". For many years there were no permanent European residents in or around present day East Cleveland; only Indians who made their home here during seasonal visits or during times when Canada was unavailable for trade because of war or disease outbreaks across its borders had any real impact on colonial America’s nascent town/city center development." During this time period new construction did not begin until after Congress passed an act creating Erie County in 1821 which also included lands adjacent to present day East Cleveland including much of today’s Cuyahoga Valley Park & Fairlane neighborhoods east of I-271 & west side of State Stgs." In 1830 Adam Smith founded Smith Brothers Metals company with his brother David initialing a 999 pound gold bar that became one ounce gold coin called “The Eagle” thus beginning American investment into precious metals — something that would continue until classic silver coins appeared approximately fifty years later - but it wasn't until 1835 when John Dennison moved his family from Pottsville PA into what is now historic Downtown East Cleveland in order establish a small smelting operation processing lead ore brought overland via Canandaigua Creek" It wasn't until 1840 when Grosse Pointe Farms businessman Elias Dearborn came ontothe scene with plans for manufacturing pneumatic presses – which led directly to foundation stone laying for First National Bank building at 113 S Broadview Ave soon followed by various industrialist families moving intoEast Cleveland throughout this periodestablishing such staples as Rubber Products Co., Rubber Stamp Mills Inc., Paintsilver Paper Mill Company

The city was founded in 1812 by General Simon Pierpoint and his troops as an outpost on the Great Lakes after they were driven out of towns on the other side of the river. In 1815, East Cleveland became part of Cuyahoga County and remained an agricultural township until it became a city in 1903. Today, East Cleveland is home to more than 100,000 people and is known for its rich history and cultural heritage. The first settlers to live in what is now East Cleveland were farmers who came from upstate New York during the early 1800s. The town was named after General Simon Pierpoint because he led a unit of soldiers against Indians in 1812. Afterward, many families moved into the area to farming or manufacturing businesses. One important factor that helped make East Cleveland a successful city was its location on Lake Erie – this made it easy for businesses to get goods and people to trade with each other. In addition to its financial success, East Cleveland also experienced some political turmoil during its early years. In 1817, when Cuyahoga County was formed from portions of several adjacent townships, riots took place between local residents and county officials over taxes. This led to three days of violence that left at least three people dead and dozens injured. However, these events didn’t dampen enthusiasm for incorporation into the new county; rather, they helped solidify support for eastern Ohio as a whole. Even though incorporation didn’t bring about major changes for East Cleveland citizens until after World War II (when it became one of ten cities incorporated within Greater Cincinnati), there are some key moments that date back to our city’s history – such as when Mayor Harry Martz dedicated Chestnut Street as Main Street in 1922 or when President Franklin D Roosevelt visited East Cleveland on July 6th 1944 while visiting Lake Erie Naval Station (which later became Trump Tower). Overall,East Cleveland has long been home to talented individuals who have shaped our city into what it is today – including politicians such as mayor Tom Brown (2006-2015), businessmen such as George W Bush (41st president), LeBron James (23rd president), Dwyane Wade (4th president), Michael Jordan (13th president) and John Kasich (1st governor).
East Cleveland was platted in 1836 as a village on the east side of the Cuyahoga River. The first settler to arrive in what is now East Cleveland was John Richardson, who came from Scotland in 1836. The original town site was located at what is now Clairton and Marginal roads. In 1839, the village was moved to its present location on the west side of the river. In 1868, East Cleveland became an unsuccessful attempt by Republican Party members to gain control of Ohio's Ulysses S. Grant presidential election victory over incumbent Andrew Johnson. That same year, East Cleveland annexed part of neighboring Warren County to form a new city government. In 1888, East Cleveland annexed part of adjacent Muskingum County to form a new city government. The annexation led to more growth in East Cleveland and eventually made it one of Ohio's most populous cities with over 100,000 residents by 1900. During World War II, East Cleveland served as headquarters for American forces stationed in Europe through 1942-1945. From 1945-1946, it also served as the temporary capital of Ohio during the war when Columbus refused to become involved because of its damaged infrastructure. It re-opened in 1951 after being closed for many years due to damage caused by firestorms that swept across much of central Ohio during those years (the 1946 firestorm destroyed parts of downtown Cincinnati). In 1969, Mayor Tom Bradley appointed Joseph Laughlin as president and CEO of local steel company United Steelworkers Local 814 (USL).
