In 1865, however, the militia was reactivated in Dublin under the command of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Dublin, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Clark County. It is located on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Delaware River. As of the 2010 census, Dublin had a population of 71,845. The first Europeans to visit what is now Dublin were French fur traders in 1701 and 1702. The first permanent settler was Englishman John Law in 1764. The town was named after John Duke of York, who had been exiled from England for supporting the American Revolution. In 1814, when General Andrew Jackson was elected president, he appointed Judge George Stephenson as United States Surveyor General for Ohio to survey and map out new land grants in that state for settlers (many of whom would be Irish). Stephenson's report included his idea for a town on the Scioto River between Cincinnati and Dayton called "Dublin." This name stuck and Dublin became one of America's most important cities during its early 19th century growth period. In 1829-30 James Kapp created one of America's earliest water systems by creating a canal through downtown Dublin which led to an increase in trade throughout central Ohio because it allowed goods to be transported quickly and easily from Boston to Cincinnati without having to go through Cleveland or other large towns on the way back. The canal also allowed easy access for farmers markets all along its length today; today you can see evidence of this system at many locations around downtown Dublin including Canal Street Marketplace, Kinsella Place Mall, and Elmwood Avenue Shopping Center! Hilliard, Andrew McNaught and others. The growth of Dublin stalled during the 1830s as waves of immigrants arrived from eastern Europe seeking opportunities for new life and land in America. However, after 1840 when Irish-born Americans began pouring into the area in large numbers, Dublin exploded in population growth once again thanks to its expanding commerce and infrastructure. By 1860, the city had reached a population of over 100,000 people and it steadily grew through the 19th century until World War I halted its progress as a major American center of industry and society
