The national guard was activated in Dover, Ohio on September 15th, 1912. The first unit to arrive in town was the 9th Regiment of U.S. Infantry which arrived on October 2nd. The unit served until November 12th when it was replaced by the 1st Battalion of the Reserve United States Volunteer Cavalry.
Dover is a town in the northwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 28,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dover was founded in 1814 by Captain David Dudley and his wife Elizabeth Dudley who named it for the Greek town of Dómara on the Mediterranean Sea. The first post office in Dover was established in 1815. In 1824, Dover became part of what would become the Northwest Territory of Ohio. The territory was renamed to Northwest Ohio in 1830, but reverted to its original name in 1834 when it became a part of Indiana Territory. In 1836, Delaware County was created from parts of Northwest Ohio and neighboring Warren County; Dover and much of Delaware Township were included within Warren County. The remaining portion of Dover Township became Muskingum County in 1840 when that county was formed from eastern portions of Warren and Delaware counties. In 1850, as part of Indiana's admission into the Union as a new state, Dover voted to secede from Indiana and join Ohio; this vote caused some controversy because many residents thought that they would still be subject to Indian Removal under Ulysses S Grant's administration after Indianapolis had annexed their land near Fort Dearborn eastward into Indiana Territory (this annexation never took place). After being apportioned among Ulysses S Grant's three new states - Illinois,Indiana & Michigan - Delaware County Joined Michigan on November 16th , 1860 becoming Amherst Township with only about half its population living there before closing down due to lack Of children & other real estate changes during those years

The National Guard was established on July 16, 1790. The first unit to be organized was the 1st Battalion of Rhode Island Regiment. On October 15, 1792, the 1st Battalion of Rhode Island Regiment became the 4th Infantry Regiment and then the 3rd Infantry Regiment in 1802. In 1814, Congress created the 2nd Infantry Regiment and authorized its organization into three battalions. The regiment served in a number of wars including the Mexican-American War (1846-48), American Civil War (1861-65), and World War I (1917-1918). In 1923, Congress amended the National Guard Act to create a permanent military reserve composed of male citizens between 21 and 45 years old who were registered with their county sheriff as a “pensioner” or “veteran” national guard member. A total amount not to exceed $5,000 per year could be deposited in any one bank account for use as an emergency fund for members released from active duty service at any time during peacetime or wartime; no interest accrued on this money beyond normal government expenses necessary for providing benefits such as pensions and food stamps to these veterans. The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROCC) program also began in 1923 with enrolling male citizens age 19 to 25 who had completed high school or equivalent. This program allowed enlisted members selected from units in their state militia or regular army drill teams to attend college after their honorable discharge from military service.
