Dover, Ohio is a small town on the edge of the state of Michigan. It was founded in 1837 by Enoch Beall and his wife Sarah. Dover is located in the Shiawassee County seat of East Lansing. This change made Dover one of several townships statewide to have voting rights that year and it remained so until 1959 when all township elections were consolidated into one vote under the newly created county government. Dover, Ohio is a small town in northern Noble County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mansfield–Oxford–Dayton City metropolitan area. Dover was founded by English settlers in 1796 as part of the Northwest Territory. Dover became an incorporated village in 1814 and a city in 1871. The city was renamed Dover after General George Washington's visit to England in 1799. The first evidence of human habitation on the site where Dover now stands dates back to about 12,000 years ago when Paleo-Indians hunted and trapped game hereabouts. In 1800, journalist Solomon Spofford reported that Indians had played a key role in developing this region: "In these parts there are three nations or tribes who have been peculiarly instrumental in its early development—the Shawnees, the Delawarees and the Wyandots." In 1801, Captain Jonathan Thornburgh noted that there were "several hundred houses" along Scioto Creek but no one resided permanently near them because most people used their homes as summer residences. By 1830 there were over 1,500 residents living within six miles (10 km) of downtown Dover; by 1840 it had grown to more than 5,000 people cramming into four square blocks near what is now Third Street Bridge and First Avenue! A series of fires burned through much of central Noble county from 1836-1840 due to overcrowding caused by military brass being imported for use at Fort Dearborn; with only eight homes remaining standing after two months during that period some citizens moved out westward into Trumbull County! On July 15th 1870 as part of general turnkey operations for opening up Stark County industrial areas Toledo Electric Light Company electric wires went from Westville Junction on Seneca River east through Portsmouth Township (now Muskegon Heights), thence north through Clinton Township (now Clinton), west through Perrysburg Township (now Perrysburg), south past Grand Rapids Junction (), then east through Ashtabula Township () until reaching Dover station located 6 rods ENE of centre line on Main Street between Seneca River and Scioto Creek (). Dover was founded in 1795 by Captain John Dover and his wife, Deborah. The town was named after the English town of Dover on the Thames River. In 1802, Captain John's brother-in-law, George Stephenson, built the first steamboat from a design he had developed while working for Colonel James Dearborn. The boat transported coal from mines in Dunkirk to Dover for shipment to Philadelphia. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and made it easier for goods to get through the area. The town became an important transportation hub and many factories were constructed along the canal route. In 1840, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Dover and ordered troops stationed there to guarded trains coming into Cleveland. In 1870, a train derailment caused extensive damage to nearby towns such as Youngstown and Sandusky but no injuries occurred in Dover. The following year saw the construction of one of America's first water towers - called "The Towers" - which stood until its demolition in 1984. During World War II, much production took place at shipyards located in Delaware County including USS Dewey (DD-826) which was later renamed USS Kingman (CL-3). Many military personnel also lived and worked in Dover during this time period including members of Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force who flew missions over Nazi Germany using plane nicknamed "The Hound's Tooth".
