Dover, Ohio is a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Miami and Erie Canal. Dover was founded in 1811 as a post office and stagecoach stop called "Dover Station". The town name derived from the fact that it sat on both sides of the canal. The first settlers in Dover were residents of nearby Portsmouth and its surrounding areas. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Dover. In 1857, Dover became an incorporated village with a board of trustees. The first mayor was Elisha Dutton. In 1898, Dover built its current courthouse which served as the county seat for Muskingum County until 1925 when Toledo took over that role. In 1920, Dover merged with other villages within Muskingum County to form the city of Tiffin. On May 1, 1971, Tiffin split from Muskingum County and became its own separate municipality under the name of Delaware Township (with land adjacent to Tiffin). That same year, Dover lost its status as an incorporated village after voters rejected annexation into Tiffin by a 2-to-1 margin. The economy of Dover is based primarily on agriculture and commerce along the Miami and Erie Canal which provides transportation links between Toledo and Buffalo downriver and Cleveland upriver through downtown Toledo; as well as tourism destinations such as Amish country located east of town near Middletown Creek; Wrightwood Resort & Casino located west of town off I-480; homebuilder Danaher Corporation's Gateway Homes development just outside town off I-680; several thousand jobs are supported by local businesses such as Lowes Home Hardware chain stores; more than half a million dollars' worth of exports originating frommuskingumcountygoes outbound each month
