Delaware is a small, Midwestern state in the United States. It borders Ohio to the south, Pennsylvania to the east and Indiana to the north. The state capital is Dover. Delaware's population was 706,751 as of 2010. The area now known as Delaware was inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans before European settlement. The first Europeans to enter what is now Delaware were traders and explorers from Iceland and Norway, looking for new land to explore. In 1692, Dutchman Willem de Vlaming bought land from the Lenape in present-day Delaware County for $12 per acre. de Vlaming named his new purchase New Netherland after his homeland, Netherlands (now Belgium). In 1702, British soldiers burned down de Vlaming's house in Dover during their attempt to seize control of New Netherland. Withdrawing from Dutch rule at that time, England claimed New Netherland for its own colony - but it remains part of present-day Delaware today. For many years, both Sweden and Denmark laid claim to parts of what is now Delaware; this led to years of conflict between these countries over who had sovereignty over what areas. In 1864, when a detachment of American soldiers fought an inconclusive battle against Confederate forces near Lewes on Sussex County’s eastern border with Pennsylvania, they came into contact with Lenape Indians living along the Susquehanna River on the other side of those mountains until that battle became known as Battle Round Top or Wyoming Valley Battle (also spelled Wyoming Valley Defeat). Afterward General George Washington offered leadership and command to Colonel John Sullivan because he thought him qualified for such an assignment; Sullivan accepted instead and lead his unit through much fighting against Native Americans until he was killed in action two months later at Monmouth Junction near Camden Township in Sussex County where he stood with General Washington during that fight too! When President James K Polk inherited America’s government following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination on April 14th 1865 – including all of West Virginia - he ordered Major General Oliver Otis Howard commanding Ulysses S Grant’s Union army westward across Maryland into Virginia so Grant could cross over into Maryland proper at Harpers Ferry while Howard march towards Philadelphia – becoming onlythe third US general everto cross state lines without orders! On May 12th 1865 just south of Wilmingtonport in Kent County – less than three miles from Harperstown where Grant met up with Otis Howard four days earlier during that same march – Union troops attacked Confederate positions abandoned by their retreating brethren only moments prior! An estimated 20% or more casualties ensued due primarily to artillery fire which caused catastrophic destruction among redoubtable Confederate defenders who retreated immediately under intense mortar and artillery bombardment never again able to offer effective resistance despite being outnumbered twenty-to-one! It should be noted here that no one knows exactly how many men died during this single engagement as there are no records whatsoever kept track thereof; however based off contemporary reports it would appear somewhere around 60% or so may have been lost! As a result of this bloody clash within Confederation ahead of formal negotiations about post-war boundaries being put forth between Northern America’s victorious Allies (Union vs Confederacy) aka “The Great Lakes War” some 2 million people were displaced either internally or externally resulting in 5 percent or more US population growth rate according To Census Bureau figures published just prior thereto!!!
