Coffee was being traded between the British and American Empires for centuries and was known to have a high quality. The first commercial roasting efforts were undertaken by two small businessmen, John Fenton and Elisha Gray, in 1802. Ground coffee beans were shipped by boat down the Scioto River to Youngstown, Ohio where they were roasted and then sold directly to consumers. In 1814, Mr. Hovey founded the Clinton Coffee Company with his brother-in-law Jacob Ruppe in Youngstown. They began marketing their own roast of choice called “Hovey’s Own” which became very popular throughout America. In 1827, Columbus Coffee Company was founded with partners George Washington Carver and Ebenezer Mudgett as its first president. Columbus Roasters eventually became one of the most successful roasters in America thanks to their reputation for high quality beans and exemplary customer service. Over time, other roasters followed suit such as Pabst Blue Ribbon (now Pepsi) who purchased Columbus Coffee Company in 1929; Brown Brothers & Co., who acquired it from Pabst Blue Ribbon in 1945; Wente Manufacturing Corporation (now Wilson Sonsini) who took it over from Brown Brothers & Co., Incorporated on December 14th, 1961; finally Kroc Foods Corporation (now Kraft Foods) who acquired it on February 2nd, 1984). Delaware is a small, rural community in the southern part of Ohio. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Scioto River just east of Akron and west of Cincinnati. The first European to explore what is now Delaware was Nicholas-Jacques de Lacrosse in 1624. He named it for his ship, La Dune (the Island). In 1714, George Washington explored the area and named it for Delaware Bay on the West Coast of Virginia. In 1803, General James Kapp founded a trading post on what is now Delaware Avenue in Akron. The post served as an important link between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh until 1830 when Pittsburgh built its own Station Road junction farther north near Ashtabula County courthouse. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Wilmington played an important role as a supply depot for General Robert Ewing's Confederate Army marching through eastern Ohio with supplies and equipment across the Scioto River to support their campaign against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. After Reconstruction following the end of slavery in America, Wilmington prospered as a black commercial center with businesses such as Paintsville Soap Works and Four Corners Barbecue started by freedmen and their descendants who had regained access to their homes and land after Reconstruction ended. In 1990, Yvette Nicole Brown was born here; she would later become one of America's most famous African Americans despite living primarily in New York City during her childhood years
