The Delaware, Ohio Army National Guard has a rich military history dating back to the 18th century. The guard was organized on February 15, 1861, and its first battalion was raised in 1866. In 1898, the Delaware Unit of the United States Military Academy at West Point was created from scratch as an all-volunteer force for students in Delaware County. From there, the unit grew and eventually became part of the U.S. Regular Army when it was reorganized on July 1, 1903. The army also enlisted women in 1907 and integrated them into army units beginning in 1916. On September 16, 1918, during World War I, the Guard's 5th Battalion (Majestic) served with distinction as part of General John J Pershing's American Expeditionary Force and captured German forces at White Sands beachhead on Long Island Sound. The battalion earned two battle stars for its effort and is considered one of America's "fightingest" units during World War I. Since World War II, the Delaware Unit of West Point has continued to provide opportunities for students to study abroad through various exchange programs around the world while providing soldiers with hands-on experience in combat deployments across many theaters including Afghanistan and Iraq. Additionally, members of the guard have been mobilized multiple times throughout our country's history - most recently during Operation Neptune’s Spear which lasted from December 25-January 3rd 2009 – support operations following Hurricane Ike by patrolling routes vital to communication within central Ohioz

In 1724, British colonists established Fort Pitt on an island in what is now Pittsburgh when they discovered this area had potential for shipping traffic between Philadelphia and India via the Ohio River Valley. After several years of construction, Fort Pitt was abandoned because it was not able to handle large volumes of traffic or defend against attack from Native Americans. In 1775, during the American Revolution, British forces burned down Fort Pitts dockyard after capturingPhiladelphia during their Siege of Philadelphia (1776-77). This event helped start Pennsylvania’s industrial revolution which led to increased production throughout Great Britain and greater prosperity for many people across Europe. The fortresses along the Ohio River continued to be used by both sides during this time as military posts until 1812 when they were disbanded with most operations moved eastward towards Detroit where troops could be stationed without fear of enemy attack from upriver
