The Ohio Naval Militia (ONM) was formed in Defiance, Ohio on October 3, 1855 as a part of the Union Navy. The ONM served as a reserve force for the United States Navy and was first stationed in Toledo. In 1861, the ONM was reactivated and placed into service under General David Hunter during the American Civil War. The ONM played an important role in providing support to naval vessels engaged in operations along the Confederate coast. After the war, the ONM was disbanded and its members were absorbed into other military organizations. However, traces of its navy gift history remain today with various elements of the community hosting annual naval Auxiliary Day events commemorating past donations from OHNMC members. On February 15, 1907, Rear Admiral Wm Halsey presented Commandant Edwin Fenton with a gift of two torpedo boats valued at $5,000 each from USS President Cleveland (CA-12). This gift is considered to be one of the most significant contributions made to naval aviation by ONM members. In 1926 Commodore John Gadsden presented Rear Admiral George Dewey Jr., commanding officer USNRHV-1 with a donation of two torpedo boats valued at $10,000 each from USS Constitution (CV-2). This donation is also considered to be one of the most significant contributions made to naval aviation by OHNMC members. In 1942 Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz presented Commandant James Lickwith with a donation of four torpedoes valued at $20,000 each from USS Lexington (CV-19). This donation is also considered to be one of the most significant contributions made to naval aviation by OHNMC members.

Defiance, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio that was founded in 1810. It is located on the banks of the Olentangy River and is bordered by Trumbull County to the north, Sandusky County to the east, and Licking County to the south. The population of Defiance was 986 at the 2000 census. The first European settlers in Defiance were Frenchmen who arrived in 1795 and named it La Ville de Grasse after their homeland, France. In 1810, an American military expedition under General John Stark attacked and burned down La Ville de Grasse as revenge for French colonial exploitation of Native Americans living near present-day Defiance. The settlement was renamed Defiance after George Washington's victory over British forces at Fallen Timbers in 1794. In 1818, Indian traders from Pennsylvania settled around what is now Defiance Creek while working with Muskingum Indians on land grant given to them by President James K. Polk as part of Treaty No. 3 following his successful war against Mexico City's Santa Anna dynasty. By 1830, there were more than 100 white people living inDefiance Township while only 10 or 12 Cherokee lived within a five-mile radius (less than one-quarter mile today). In 1840, defenseless defenseless Indians led by Chief Tecumseh fought a three-week long battle against federal troops at Battle of Ottawa before successfully fleeing into Canada; this event is generally considered to be the start of America's westward expansion into Canada through include both land acquisition andabandage treaties signed with aboriginal peoples subsequent years including Tlingit/Tsimshian people along Alaska coast as well as Haida Gwaii Island off Vancouver Island etc.). All but two years between 1836 and 1840 were spent building new churches which ranged from log cabins (First Baptist Church)to brick Gothic Revival style buildings such as Second Presbyterian Church which seats 4115 people today according to 2010 census data . One church did not yet exist when first organization chartered - Third Presbyterian Church which would later become known as Christ United Methodist Episcopal Zion Parish Inc.. In addition 2 schools operated independently throughout early days: Aided School also founded circa 1830 & closed circa 1860 & Academy also founded circa 1830 & closed circa 1860 but opened briefly late 1800’s #2 Colored school open 1865-1867 house #1 since destroyed 1888
