This caused many of them to die during the struggle for freedom. However, through hard work and determination these colonists won their war against England and established themselves as a sovereign nation within Confederation with other American states. This event is known as the United States Revolution. In Defiance today you can find several reminders of this important time in history such as an old cannonball found at the river's edge, a plaque commemorating the anniversary of the revolution, and memorials to those who died in battle or were taken prisoner during the conflict.
On September 15, 1813, the Ohio Territory was created from portions of Kentucky and Indiana. The territory was named in honor of George Washington, who had died nine months earlier. On November 3, 1814, the United States Congress passed a bill creating a provisional government to govern the new territory. The provisional government was composed of military officers and men from the Ohio militia. The first president of the provisional government was James Kieft. Defiance County was formed on December 1, 1814, from parts of Warren and Speed Counties.
