The town was named for the defiant act by its founders, who refused to let American troops march into their town during the American Revolution. The story of Defiance begins with two brothers, John and Nicholas Preston. John had been born in 1759 in what is now Defiance, Ohio. He served in the British army during the War of Independence and then returned home to start a new life with his wife Rachelle Preston. In 1786, Nicholas Preston was born in what is now Defiance, Ohio. At age 21, he decided to leave his family behind and join his brother John in America. He arrived at Mount Vernon on July 4th, 1787. Nicholas Preston soon found himself involved in many political protests against British rule. On November 3rd of that year, he helped organize a group of farmers who were going on a peaceful protest against English taxes. This led to him being arrested and charged with inciting revolution! After several months of jail time, Nicholas Preston was released on bail but decided not to return to America until he could find more support for his cause. In early December 1789, Nicholas Preston met another man named James Ketchum while protesting near where Mount Vernon now stands (Ketchum had recently moved from Boston). They agreed to form an organization called "the Cincinnati Rifles" to fight for independence from Britain. This group quickly grew large enough that they needed someone to lead them – so Nicholas Preston took on this role! He started preparations for war by organizing food supplies and building barracks for the Cincinnati Rifles at nearby Wrightstown Township (now part of Cleveland). On January 12th of 1790, word arrived back home that General George Washington was about to invade Canada! Nicolas Preston immediately organized an uprising inside prison at Lancaster Jail just outside Philadelphia! With only a few men left loyal to him after James Ketchum's death three weeks earlier (!), Nicolas Preston led an assault on Yorktown Castle which resulted in successful resistance against American forces! After successfully resisting repeated enemy assaults over some weeks (and losing many friends along the way), Nicolas Preston finally capitulated late February 7th under heavy fire from American forces！defeated yet again!!! Americans took custody of all prisoners including Nicholas Prestons son John Jr., who had also supported him throughout the struggle！mourning “a great fatherless boy” whose “fathers did nothing save die”1

For years after this event,Defiance residents proudlydisplayed "Independence" emblems on their buildings to showoff their defiant spirit. In 1819, following U.S. President James K Polk's order to remove all Native American artifacts from public land in Indiana Territory,Defiance residents gathered around a fire and burned any items they could find that related to their ancient cultures. This actof defiance helped promote the idea of Indian Removal which would ultimately lead to the death of more than two thousand natives in Kansas during the 1830s alone.
