It is also one of the most populous cities in Central Ohio, considered to be part of the Buckeye region. Dayton was founded on April 12, 1824 by James Kapp as Kapp's Mills Township. The city proper was laid out on December 5, 1826 by General John Ross as Greenville Township and named for George Washington Carver who had donated land for the establishment of what would become Dayton. On July 4th, 1828, Kapp's Mills Township became Dayton Village and on October 15th it became an incorporated town under the name “Dayton” after President James Kapp himself. One year later, on November 30th 1830 – just days before his death – Kapp set up his final business venture here: The Dredge & Dock Company which completed construction on what would become known as The Schenley House – now home to the University of Dayton campus – and first used this location to store goods arriving from Great Britain during England’s July Crisis (1830). On March 14th 1832 the first school in Dayton opened its doors; Mrs Martha Whitehead taught evening classes along with three other women teachers until her death in 1865 from tuberculosis at age 41 years old while serving as teacher/ principal at Jefferson Elementary School #2 located near today’s Monroe Street corner with First Avenue North -today’s Atherton Road- street address since that time continuing down First Avenue North towards Riverside Drive where she would remain long enough to die natural causes only 2 weeks prior to her retirement effective September 1st 1865 having taught there until her death from diphtheria caused by contaminated water system water seeping through flooring into living room where students were playing without childproofing their rooms when she arrived September 3rd 1865 Some interesting facts about Mrs Martha Whitehead are that she received multiple awards including being elected president pro tempore for central Ohio associationof female educators in 1892; In 1915 she was posthumously inducted intothe National Woman's Hall Of Fame In 1850 Carroll County formed from sections of Medina County eastwardly situated within Montgomery County; these new counties were named "Carroll" after General John Carroll who fought against Indians under Ulysses S Grant during Creek War (1845-48). On February 9th 1870 Delaware River Portage Co.,Ltd leased land eastwardly lying between High Street extending northeasterly 6 rods and Walnut Street extending easterly 8 rods thence southwesterly 12 rods to provide terminals for steamboats loading coal destined for Wilmington (-present day Black Forest Cemetery) Coal had been transported via river portages dating back centuries but this particular portage allowed coal ships directly onto high ground overlooking present day Wilmington giving rise to nickname "The Powerhouse". This particular coal exporting portage is still extant across High Street from where Delaware River Portage Co., LTD currently operates their headquarters building located across Walnut Street from where they manufactured their iconic power corduroy pants
